Nyzatidine side effects

Hi everyone,

Just a query for anyone on nyzatidine for acid reflux and also living with bronchiectasis. I have just transferred from taking omeprazole for acid reflux to nyzatidine as the omeprazole might have affected my osteoporosis, but am finding myself much more breathless and the acid reflux more uncomfortable than when I was on omeprazole. Has anyone else taken nyzatidine and found themselves more breathless etc. I would really appreciate your thoughts. Best Wishes.

Hi, I have bronchiectasis and acid reflux and have been on Omaprazole20mg for around 10 years. There has been some concern about this medication and my doctor suggested I try lowering the dose to 10mg. It was horrendous and I didn't want to stay on it and went back on 20mg.

However, I did some research and found out that it was extremely painful and difficult to reduce the strength of Omaprazole with a view to coming off them. But it could be done if you really wanted to. A number of people had worked with an understanding doctor to do so and found the following method worked. I decided it was worth persevering. Knowing it was going to be difficult actually helped to keep me on track.

So, two months ago I started alternating the dose. One day 20mg tablet, the next 10mg. It was very uncomfortable at first so, as advised I included taking a heartburn medicine (Boots own make) as its much cheaper than the branded one. This helped me when the reflux was particularly bad. It took a month to see a real improvement but I am now down to 10mg every day. The next step is to try taking one 10mg every other day until I can finally wean myself off them completely. I have stuck with it and found this very slow method definitely works.

As for the alternative medication you are now on perhaps you could include the heartburn medicine until your body has adjusted to the Nyzatidine. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Thanks so much for your reply Roadrunner. Have tried repeatedly to com off omeprazole and like you have found it nearly impossible. Did manage for 3 weeks with just heartburn medicine early in the year but had no quality of life as constantly dealing with heartburn and indigestion and went back on. Will certainly try what you suggest - let me know how you get on with coming off completely I would be very interested to hear. Good luck with it. Thanks very much.

PS have gone back to omeprazole today as can’t take another day of heartburn and indigestion on nyzatidine!!!
