Eye Surgery

Feel such a twig. Went for cattarachs surgery. Got there no problems had all the usual drops put something to numb the eye. Went into theatre got on the bed. I went to lie down and because it was so flat I was holding on to bars of the bed to pull myself. Up by then my b.reathing was all over the place. The surgeon tried to calm me down with a lovely nurse holding hands. Tried my breathing exercises to calm down but nothing worked. My problem was lying so flat I cannot do even as a child. Surgeon decided not to go ahead. Went out with me to talk to my hubby possible change of hospital for sedation. Next problem is will they have to knock me out completely.

Hi lizzric nee Spacecat, that was a shame I too have a problem lying flat and would have the same problem. Shame you have to be knocked out but it will be worth it in the long run. Take care x

That was horrible for you. I did manage to lie flat for my catarracts but had to do my clearance first and it is always a nightmare. Dentist and hygeinist this week the same. Those who don’t have breathing problems just don’t really understand. I do hope that they find a way to do it for you. It is so worth it. xx

I cannot lay flat, or on my stomach so have similar problems at the dentist,

My cattarchs now being referred to main hospital for possible sedation. Just hoping not knocked out completely not sure what happens. Maybe if I had seen bed in upright position to begin with and like dentist move bed down slowly might of helped. But the same cannot lie on stomach either.

Hi lizzric they cannot knock you out for cataract surgery because you have to keep your eyes open . They will have come across your problem before and will know exactly how to deal with it so don’t worry. It’s just amazing after surgery you will see so much better Take care xxx

I think they keep your eye open with some kind of instrument . I don't think you could do it yourself for that length of time . 🤗

Hello Spacecat I didn’t recognise you. What a horrible experience for you, for all kinds of reasons. I can’t lie flat either. Hopefully something can be sorted out so that you can get the procedure done

Thank you. Having to use magnifying glass when eye goes foggy. The other eye is complete fog which they cannot do anything with .

Hi Spacecat (Lizzric2). I had noticed that you hadn't been around for while. Sorry that you've had problems with your email providers. The internet can be a right pain sometimes.

That said though, I'm so very sorry that you had such a dreadful experience when you went for cataract surgery. It must have been very frightening. I would have felt very much the same though and would have been in a panic at the thought of having cataracts removed while awake before I ever got to the table.

I don't think you should knock yourself for struggling when you did your best to try and calm yourself and control your breathing. At least the surgeon and nurse had some empathy at the time.

I was sorry to read in your reply to HH that you are so impaired by your poor vision. I hope that you are able to have the surgery under sedation and that you will not have to wait too long.

I have curvature of the spine and have had the op done on both eyes. Requested that the bed be raised each time and that was done .

Cannot give exact details or measurements but agreed I was comfortable before he proceeded. The last one was in the last year the first several years ago. You can feel movement during the op but cannot see through the eye and not painful. Good luck the results are amazing 😉

Hi Lizzie. I had mine done at St. Paul’s. Liverpool. I knew I couldn’t lie flat , also as I go lower, I cough. Surgeon lay waist down flat, then raised chest , slightly then neck and head flattish. I went at the end of a theatre session one day to try out the bed with him and team there. We were both happy with position., so Had it done about 2 weeks later. in. I also tried meditation at home in that position to get me used to it. I think that helped. Just lying like that with calm music would prob help. I did it for about 40 mins a day. Good luck.xx

Thank you. Did you have sedation. Think as well as living flat problem it is the thought of them coming close to eye

I had the usual drops and injections. The injection under eye was a bit painful for a couple of seconds.Couldn’t feel anything afterwards. Was conscious throughout with nurse holding my hand. I was instructed to squeeze her hand if I thought I might cough. They covered my body with some type of cloth, so only my eye was uncovered. They wafted a bit of oxygen in there which they said they always did. I get claustrophobic but this was ok. I took a cd with me that they played while they did the op. They took really good care of me. You could ask gp or eye op drs about a light sedative to take the edge off stress. Good luck

Thank you I hoping for better experience when referred. It's the lying flat for me that causes a problem. Hopefully with a sedative and if they can put up chair I will be ok.

Had same problem lying flat. Just told them that couldnt lie flat and they rais ed the end of the bed . No problem. Had more trouble than that at dentist who was reluctant to raise the chair height at all .

Hello Lizzric/ Spacecat, guess you feel concerned after your not so good experience. But at least they are rereferring, but might take time unfortunately. Pity they can't do this op in chairs like the dentist , they manage upright scans for people who are overweight afterall. They can do it with you asleep but sounds like they are going to air towards a seditive like dentists use which wares off quicker. I am sure they will explain this to you or your husband may need to stay in a few hours till it wears off and someone with you for twentyfour hours which is no prob as your husband is around. Sorry to hear your problem and hope you won't have to wait too long for it to be done. Sure it will be over soon. Stay safe & well

I had my cataract op several years ago and and decided it was a doddle so my other eye was not going to be a problem, unfortunately I have a condition called Fuchs Dystrophy and 3 days after my surgery I had to have an emergency appointment with the consultant who said my cornea was degrading and prescribed Sodium Chloride drops, five years later I'm hoping to have my corneal transplant on 12th October after 3 cancellations. Mr Usmani wanted to put me to sleep but because of Corona virus having a bad effect if you get the virus after surgery it's going to be sedation and lying flat for an hour and a half. I will have to lie flat for 2 hours before discharge then recline the car seat on way home then 48 hours on my back with 15 minute comfort breaks in an hour if needed. I've practically lost my sight in the left eye so I'm looking fwd to having better vision by Christmas trouble is I'll have to go through it all again on my right eye, this time he's planning to possibly do both cataract and transplant at same time which should save me all the time I have had to wait. Sorry for the length of this post but I really didn't mind the cataract op.

I had a bit of a problem too but the nurse put something under my neck, not perfect but enabled me to have the op. It is very quick actually and I am sure with a bit of sedation you will be absolutely fine. The joy of seeing bright colours again will be well worth it.

I might ask about something under my neck and ask the nurses to help me also check on mild sedative to keep me calm. Couple of friends have had it done and it was brilliant like you to see again. No more fog.
