WELL , I DID ONLY JUST ! …=… I NEED MY EARS SYRINGED ! , I KNOW THIS HAS'NT GOT MUCH TO DO WITH COPD ETC , BUT ON RINGING MY DOCTOR FOR AN APPOINTMENT , REGARDING MY COPD ETC , HAD TO KEEP ASKING HIM "TO SPEAK UP A BIT " ETC , AND WAS TOLD WHEN ENQUIRING ABOUT MY LUGS ! … = " THE NHS DOES NOT CARRY OUT THIS TREATMENT ANYMORE , AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO FIND A CHEMIST ETC WHO WILL DO IT FOR POSSIBLY FOR =" £40..00 = EACH EAR " …...WHAT ?????????, WHATS HAPPENED HERE THEN , ? NHS PAYS FOR OVERSEAS " HEALTH TOURISTS" LOOKING FOR FREE TREATMENT HERE , WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO THE NHS , COSTING IT THOUSANDS , WHEN I CAN;T HAVE THIS SIMPLE PROCEDURE BY A NURSE LASTING A FEW MINUETS FOR FREE ? AND MAY HAVE TO PAY £ 80.00…………...ANY ONE KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS = TAR MUCHLY …….

I've just had my ears syringed at home by the District Nurses.

Two years ago I expressed concern over my hearing. The GP sent me to the local hospital for an audiology check, the nurse who did it then sent me on to the consultant. Did not need a hearing aid, but no mention that audiology was going t be reduced.

I bought one of these. The audio clinic congratulate me on my clean ear'oles but can't recommend then. 🙄

Crazy, and this makes it worse, one of our GPs syringes ears at his private clinic for £40 an ear, but not at the Gp surgery. And neither do the nurses. Jane

I live in Wales and have my ears syringes a couple of times a year. My surgery has always offered this service. You have to use olive oil for about a week to soften the wax and the nurse then syringes out the liquid wax. Perhaps you are unlucky with your surgery and it is available in others. However, England may not offer this service any longer full stop!

Syringing has never worked for me, they kept giving me another appointment.

Last time I had trouble, they had stopped doing it but referred me to ENT at the hospital for microsuction. Took 2 appointments to clear my ears.

They do it in Scotland and prescriptions are free. No wonder house prices have gone up! Hope you can appeal that decision. Ridiculous!

Hi im from Cardiff Wales and my surgery used to do it. Not anymore so was referred to the hospital to have it done there. Hope this helps. Karen. Xxx

I have to pay now, though it does seem very effective. The nurse used to tell me to put olive oil drops in every fortnight, but I keep forgetting. Might be worthwhile paying the once, and then try to keep it at bay with olive oil.

Hi Vittorio, this indeed seems to the way the health service is going, unfortunately. I got my ears syringed recently at my doctor's on the NHS, but I know someone who had the same experience as you, and was referred to an OPTITION'S to get this done. I think it cost him £50 for the two ears to be done and they used a suction device to get his wax out. It would appear that some doctor's surgeries up here are doing it and others referring patients to private businesses. I can only speak for Scotland. I don't know if it's now universal down there in England to be referred to a private company. Hope it works out for you.

I've never paid ever! If they are busy at our surgery they just send me to the local walk -in centre.

The problem is to do with insurance and the danger of perforating an eardrum if things go wrong. Some surgeries are happy to do it; others refer people to the local hospital because they don't want to take the risk.
