Well that is now it, I no longer own a business and will for a, hopefully, short period be a gentleman of leisure whilst the new owner sorts himself out. I already feel like a tiger in a cage, pacing around. This is going to take a while to get used to after 32 years, if ever. The new owner will definitely need my services, knowledge and skills, he spent 3 days working alongside me last week and his lack of experience showed up, a surprise he is only 26, I thought he was in his 30's when he bought it all.
On another note, yesterday I spent the day planning and organising another holiday, yes you have guessed it, we are going back to the Norfolk Broads, sailing again. We have booked the smallest lightest sailing cruiser again, this time hopefully, she will have been repaired, and be fit and ready to sail. This time Sharon and I will be taking our son with us, Michael, who is an experienced sailor, he is a big, fit lad, so he will be able to take a lot of the load from me as opposed to earlier this year. We will be able to sail for a whole day and I will enjoy that immensely. We will be setting off on the 12th October for a week, just 6 weeks away, almost last minute. We were lucky to get a yacht, let alone the smallest one in the fleet, still 10 tons though. We have been in October quite a few times in the past, the biggest issue is condensation at night, inside the accommodation but on the plus side we don't have to worry about mosquitoes. The rivers are also a lot quieter, not as many "stinkies" (motor cruisers) about to get in our way, especially as most "stinkies" do not know that sail has priority over motor.
Here is hoping I can stay fit and well, a bit a gamble, but hey, all of us here face that problem. If we freeze at that thought, none of us would do anything or go anywhere.

Surely sailing is now going to play a major part of your life in the future? You write so well on the subject you nearly had me selling up and buying a boat after reading about your training holiday a couple of years back. Whatever you do will be quietly successful and I wish you all the very best. 🙂👍
My daughter is already looking around locally, to find a hire boat, even an open decker so we can sail to the Isle of Wight for a day. She has inherited my sense of adventure.

Yes, I will be doing the 2 1/2 mile walk to the pub, nice and cool for it and dry too. It takes an hour and usually ready for a pint on arrival, after getting my breath back that is. Quite often my first pint is OJ and tonic water, an extremely refreshing combination.

None of us know what will happen, be that health or other factors, the main thing is to live for today and plan for tomorrow, it's all a gamble because none of us know what will come, everything can change in an instant and life rarely goes how you think. Good luck on your semi retirement 2gs, I'm sure you'll find plenty of things that you enjoy doing to keep you busy, and more sailing sounds like a good start. Good luck to the new owner of the business too, with your guidance and expertise, he should do well - then you'll have the best of both worlds. In the meantime, enjoy being a 'gentleman of leisure' - it can't be that hard, after all it's only the leisure bit that will be new to you😉👍 Wishing you well.
Big change 2G - I wish all the very best. If the new owner needs your help for the foreseeable, then maybe you could charge him a consultancy fee! Anyway you are such a resourceful person Im sure you'll have new plans and schemes. And Im sure you'll be a brilliant role model for us all.
I console myself with knowing that none of us are immortal and retirement from the rat race would be inevitable. I am reasonably proud to have gone way past the age of retirement, let alone dealing with the poor health of having 5 chronic illnesses.
On a other note, at my Oncology appointment a couple of weeks ago there were no visible changes shown with an X-Ray, all stable. My next appointment in 6 months time with a CT Scan, another 3 1/2 years to go and hopefully by then, off the hook

I am pleased that we have dispelled your fears. I have said it before, every cloud has a silver lining, developing COPD and getting diagnosed has saved my life, because without it my lung cancer would have gone un-diagnosed until it was too late to treat.

Then you put icing on the 🎂 cake by telling us of your next sailing adventure in 6 weeks time with Sharon and your son. It is for sure a great idea to know if the going gets tough,your son can do more of the physical work,although I think you'll be fighting him off,whilst maintaining you can do it all on your own. I hope you will allow us to all share your Norfolk Broads experience again as your daily diaries were so readable .... almost addictive😂.
Hahaha "whilst maintaining you can do it all on your own", it seems you know me all too well I will be taking more of a back seat this time though, it has been a few years since Michael has been back to the Broads and would like to give him chance to brush up on his sailing skills. He will no doubt be wanting to go back with his friends.

Sounds like this retirement business is taking you way back in time to a 'Swallows and Amazons' type of existence which i am sure will maintain your health and your sanity..
Staying active, even indoors with my rowing machine and static cycle, will be uppermost in my mind. I have not made it this far and I am not going to blow it all away. It will take time to get into a new routine with exercising.
Knowing you even though you are now "a gentleman of leisure" you will be busy . 😊 I know when I stopped working I was worried as to what I'd do to keep occupied , but surprisingly we find things don't we? 😅
How exciting to go sailing. ⛵ I have ever only been on rather large vessels and I'd imagine manning your own vessel would be very exciting indeed. Would it not be very cold in October? I always imagined sailing holidays to be a summer activity. In the mean time keep yourself as well and rested as possible for this adventure.
Hi Cas. Sailing in October is usually not too cold. The average temp in Norfolk is about 15°C, which to be honest is well inside my comfort zone, sailing is very energetic which generates a lot of body heat. In fact 15°C is just about right to not get all sweaty and uncomfortable. We did have one year, 2009, when there was a cold snap, with some ice and snow, we built a small snowman on the bow. All the modern yachts do have hot air heating in the accommodation as well.
There are a few very old lightweight traditional yachts, that have no electricity, no engine, no gas, no heating, no toilet and no water tank, just a wooden yacht, including the mast, sails and a couple of bunks. Paraffin lamps, primus stove, water can and a chemical toilet are used. When there is no wind, a "quant" (a wooden pole with forked end) is used, shoved into the riverbed at the bows and then walk down the deck to the stern, thus pushing the boat along, and then repeat. Extremely basic indeed, camping on the water! A real enthusiast's holiday.
