The idea of coils and valves is to collapse parts of the lung that no longer work and make room for the working parts to expand. It stands to reason that if you still have most of your lungs working, even partially, then it would be detrimental to your breathing rather than beneficial. A very simplified answer. Of course there are many other health reasons why you will not be considered as well, you can only ask why on your next appointment.

I doubt that I would qualify either, I also have a predisposition to lung cancer and coils would undoubtedly interfere with any future SABR treatment should cancer rear it's ugly head again, with a dozen equivocal nodules.

Here is your answer,bit of a long read but it may help you understand a little more about both the procedure and the patient selection criteria.

p.s i am sorry i gave you the run down on valves as coils are not often used these days as they are difficult to remove if required,though coils are not dependent on negative collateral ventilation which would open up the procedure to more people.

2 greys has given you a very good explanation as to what the valves/coils do but the basic explanation for selection is that;

1. You need to have a certain type of Emphysema which can be successfully treated,this would entail having clearly divisible lobes with their fissures(joints) intact.

2.Your Fev1 would normally have to be 30% or less

3.Any underlying severe bronchitis or bronchiectasis would normally rule you out of the criteria

4.You need to have completed pulmonary rehab and have been smoking free for at least 3 months

There are many other reasons why the procedure would not be applicable but i have given you the main ones and you should seek consultation as to why it is felt it is not applicable to you .

Hope that helps you understand a little more about the procedure.
