That’s shocking JAS. Asbestos in all buildings should be a thing of the past given the terrible effects it has on people. I just don’t understand and we should be spending money on this. Xxxxx

Why you? Because you care, because you have no vested business interests, because you want to stop others having the same fate.

In 2004-5 I worked in a school where we were told not to put drawing pins in the walls because of the asbestos; and in 2003-4 I worked in a telephone exchange where we were told the same.

i worked on school building refurb and building project's also in boiler room's on ship's and came into contact with a lot of asbestos, no protective clothing back then, after i was diagnosed with copd, i asked my gp if this could be the reason im suffering with my condition, but because i was a smoker at the time he said no it was down to my smoking habit

I used to do a lot of asbestos sampling and was wondering whether my fixed small airways obstruction had anything to do with it, but apparently not. The only time I was technically over-exposed was when I was sampling in a school where the asbestos ceiling was being removed. The kitchen staff had refused to work there even though the ceiling was perfectly intact and covered in 2 inches of plaster. Removing it caused more asbestos contamination than leaving it alone, and that would always be my advice: if it isn't damaged, DON'T remove it! There's a reason for the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and asbestos removal is a good example.

We have asbestos in the ceiling of our hall. Our builder left as much as he could untouched. Of the amount that had to come down, he stuffed it in the back of his van and dumped it in a friend’s disused well (or equivalent) up on the Quantocks - all part of some reciprocal arrangement. . .

This is Artex, very common ceiling finish. It contains about 10% chrysotile asbestos, which is the least harmful because its curly fibres are difficult to break down into a respirable size. So long as it isn't sanded down, it shouldn't present too much of a problem, though the disposal method seems a bit dubious.

I’m not sure that it is Artex - we had that in other areas. This was more of a concern to our not-entirely-reputable builder.
