I am also affected by this situation! I take Valsartan and some batches have been found to contain cancer-causing ingredients. Some of the basic powders are now produced in India and China. I do not think either of these medications are actually banned in Holland or Canada, it is due to a massive recall.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded its recall of a common Chinese-manufactured blood pressure and heart drug after a cancer-causing ingredient was found.

On Aug. 17 (2018), the FDA said that India-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited announced that it “is voluntarily recalling 14 lots of Valsartan/Amlodipine/HCTZ tablets to the consumer level due to the detection of trace amounts of an unexpected impurity found in an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufactured by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals,” which is based in China.

Torrent said that it hasn’t received any reports of adverse effects linked to the recall of the drug."

theepochtimes.com/fda-expan...

"Recall issued for 5 prescription drugs sold in Canada

Affected medications include amlodipine, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, lamotrigine, telmisartan"

None of these medications are BANNED, some have been recalled because of manufacturing problems.

Good links from skischool if you are in the UK

Its prescription only med in UK (info intended for health professionals) ; medicines.org.uk/emc/produc...

Here is the European Medicines Agency information on it if you want to look into it further. ema.europa.eu/ema/index.jsp...

I also take Amlodipine and have done so for 18 years. I didn’t know of any ban. Xxxx

Same here....I'm quite shocked as I had no idea at all it was banned elsewhere. Fortunately as far as I'm aware I'm not suffering any of the side effects....... I attribute my severe breathlessness to COPD and Bronchiectasis......and angina and heart failure and type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure etc. I was prescribed it originally for very high BP I think a few years ago.

Me either. I’ve been on it for 3 years. But I’ve never noticed anything off about it and feel fine. But it makes you wonder!!

It’s the entry level (ie. cheapest) Calcium Channel Blocker used for lowering blood pressure levels.

If it suits you, great. If not, and you suffer unacceptable side effects, ask to be changed to another until you find one that suits you.

You could always ask your GP why amlodipine is prescribed here but not on some other countries.

Other medications are banned in other countries too. Like some things are banned in the UK but are prescribed elsewhere, and Warfarin for example is not prescribed in some countries, I don’t know if it’s actually banned but it is not prescribed or available for use. For whatever reasons, certain countries approve or disapprove of different things.

Micxox. HI. I was presribed Amlodipine after a heart bypass 3 years ago I stopped using it after 2 months it made my ankles swell. All the Doctor did was give me water pills until I read the side effects on the net so I went back to the surgery and he stopped them. Bingo ! No ankle swelling

It is important to remember that not all manufacturers of Amlodipine are affected. The NHS my not buy from the affected companies. Therefore there is no reason for a recall. Best bet is to check packet for manufacturers name but also remember that not all products containing Amlodipine even by these manufacturers is affected. It is also important to remember that the risks have been only found in rats who have been given far larger doses percentage wise than humans would ever be given. From my understanding you would need to be on a huge dose to replicate the doses given to the poor old rat! Basically they believe there could be a risk but nobody could give a definite answer.

I have been taking Amlodipine for many years. On the Health Post link I read the dose for over 65s should be reduced to 2.5mg. I take 5mg and wonder if I should continue with this? I am 84.
