Hi there, I was diagnosed with copd 4 months ago and went back today to see the nurse for my first breath test. She said that it had improved slightly but mentioned an average reading. I keep on hearing on this site about Fev1 readings but have never heard about an average reading. I'm confused. Lyn

The nurse may have meant an average reading from all the breaths you recorded, or an average reading for people of your age height and gender, which may be used as a comparison. If you have to attend again for any reason, it may be an idea to ask for clarification. However virtually every medical person will probably say that the readings are only a guide for them and you, the important bit is how you feel, hence this site, where you can have lots of help and support.
You could ask for a copy of your results and then post them here and we can help you with what they mean, but of course your doctor is the best one to explain them to you.
