Prednisolone

Hi all. I was prescribed Prednisolone last week as a follow up to a course of antibiotics after having flu and a chest infection.

I have been feeling very unwell since. I have been having nightmares, bad headaches, anxiety and feeling cold in the extremities.

Has anyone ever had any side effects from this steroid.

Many thanks

Steve.

I know the feeling had bad side effects when I took them on their own. I avoid taking them where possible now.😒 xxx

Yep - Many people get side effects with preds, read the list on the patient leaflet, but note you may not get any at all - we're all affected differently.

They never caused me insomnia before but the last time I had to take them, it did..!

Take them in the morning, less likely to affect sleep at night... in theory.

Best wishes

If the side effects are worrying you then please talk to your GP or pharmacy for advice. Some people just cannot take these as the side effects outweigh the benefits.

There are a lot of side effects from taking preds. But not everyone gets them. I have only had cataracts. If we were to stop taking medication due to side effects we wouldn't live very long. I would see your GP about how you are feeling.

I would say, almost everyone gets side effects from prednisolone. Most commonly, people find they cause insomnia, a little bit of hyperactivity, increase in appetite and consequently weight gain. There are of course more serious side effects which you can read about on the leaflet that comes with your tablets but not everyone gets them.

The thing with steroids is to weigh up the pros and the cons. We all know the cons but if they really help with your breathing, then maybe it's worth putting up with the side effects. I hate taking steroids but when nothing else is helping, then I give in. Your doctor should be able to guide you on this and make sure you let s/he know about all the worries you have about them.

I agree with Billiejean_2 Yes sometimes we definitely need them but they scare the hell out of me. The vivid nightmares and lucid dreaming, the fidgets, and irrational scary thoughts I once convinced myself I had killed my family. Remind me of the bad trip tents that used to be at festivals.
