An osteopath showed me how to ease the diaphragm and massaged the sore intercostal muscles. He also released some of the tension in my back caused by repeated incorrect posture through compensating for the muscle spasms. To find a registered osteopath near you, visit osteopathy.org/find-an-oste...

Hi 59 Ruthie, it sounds like it could be digestion connected, it happens to me when I eat something my stomach or intestines don't like, food or pills when it arrives down there - sometimes makes my diaphragm suddenly intake sharply and cough -there is a little flap between bottom of oesaphagus and airway and the diaphragm spasm makes me cough, after I can breathe but also then have to blow my nose! All sounds daft I know but we can't breathe and cough at the time!

The diaphragm sits just at bottom of your sternum (chest bone) which the ribs are attached to, but not attached to spine allowing lungs to expand when breathing. So what happens with one can affect the other!

What can you about it? I tend to push gently in on my diaphragm and or rub my stomach/liver area round in small circles, the heat generated from the action seems to help relax everything. With both hands I also gently massage my lower back, that's where the kidneys are I think, with just each thumb on bottom rib while the fingers do the massaging.

NB I'm not medically qualified, as said it all helps me and relaxes the muscles.
