hi all, could any of you lovely people ,please explain to me what this means, as i havent really got a clue , gas transfer 38% from 61% copd , thank you

Your lungs are like filters lets say and if we say 100% is brand new.

Then 60% is blocked and is only working Then it drops 37% you would say the filtter is pretty blocked tosted.

Hi Muttley,

Gas transfer is how well you exchange oxygen into the blood stream on the in breath and carbon dioxide out of the blood on the out breath.

When you have a full spirometry lung function test it is called DLCO on the results sheet.

Mine is now around 23% of what it should be for a person of my age and build which is why I'm on the transplant list. My consultant told me that when it reaches around 30% they start considering transplant as an option.

Poor gas transfer is normally caused by scarring of the Alveoli as it is in my case with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
