Evening

I have heard it before, but my local hospital have opened a new wing to deal with respiratory illness and are trialling beetroot juice to help with breathing problems.

Out for some tomorrow.

At least we're getting a mention.

That's so interesting Kimmy, please keep us informed. I tried it for a while back in January and felt it was helpful but gave it up after about a month as I had to travel to a specific shopping centre to get it and it was quite expensive too. Will be dying to hear how you get on with it.

I've tried it before and I thought it tasted vile, but I'm willing to suffer if it makes a difference. I'm going to look into what the hospital is doing its not the one I go to but the one in our county town.

in reply to redted

Me to i love it...and I did read a post on someone who juiced it and had some everyday.

I use to eat everyday for a month. ..but like most things you get fedup so the last lot I boiled up...I pickled and it's still in a big jar in the fridge.

Expensive and take a long time to cook....but will put on my shopping list of must buy.

Will report back on the beetroot trial in Thailand in one month.

Andy.

I have added beetroot to my morning vegetable juice. Don't know if it is making a difference or not as there are so may things in my juice including broccoli, but have noticed an increase in energy over the last couple of days.

I cant say for certain,as my breathing is not too bad,but perhaps that's because I eat 3 globes of beetroot daily, worth a try.

I'm definitely going to try it.

From all the reading about it last time we discussed it here, it seemed that drinking the juice was more beneficial then actually eating the beet root as a veg. Apparently athletes use beetroot shots to increase their oxygen capacity.

All the more reason to try thank you.

Hi Billiejean, hope you're feeling a bit better today.

I must look into this beetroot remedy. I've not heard of it before.

Take care 🌺

Hi Jessy, yes feeling a bit better and walked as much as possible today. Still feeling very weak though. I suppose it just takes time. I've been on an extra IV since yesterday so hopefully that will help.

Jessy11 profile image
Jessy11 in reply to Billiejean_2

Hope the extra IV helps. It's good you're keeping mobile.

I was unable to do that when I spent 3 months in ICU on life support. Now 8 months later I'm still trying to get my mobility back to near normality & get driving again. My consultant told me it would take a year at least to get better & he's been right.

Keep improving & keep walking 🌼

Thanks Jessy ! Feeling as weak as I do now, I can't begin to imagine the struggle you had to go through. Not just a struggle but a fight for life. You are a formidable person to have pulled yourself back from the brink like that. And I sure you will get back to driving as well. I've finally found a comfortable spot in the bed so going to close my eyes now and do some relaxation. Positive outcome visualisation. Sleep well Jessie.

Hi Kimmy

You just reminded me of one of my many things I want to do. Thats my I bought my fantastic juicer, that's still

unopened! If only I did all the things

I intend to do! Let us know how it is.

Wonder if it will be mixed with other veggies.

Hi Rubyred777

Once you start juicing you will notice a difference in energy levels.

I juice, plus i make a fruit smoothie which i drink at lunchtime and mid afternoon.

It takes me about 35 minutes to prepare everything in the morning.

In the morning i make a veg juice and feel the benefit within 10 minutes.

For 2 people: 2 sticks celery, 2 sticks of kale, handful of spinach and mint, half a beetroot, chunk of ginger, 1 x lime/lemon, large chunk of pineapple, 2 x apples, 1 x cucumber, 2-3 broccoli plus honey to taste.

For my smoothie i juice 2 x carrots and 2 x oranges, add to my blender with a banana, small handfuls of blueberries, blackberries raspberries, half a mango plus honey to taste.

This gives me all the vitamins and nutrients that i need for the day.

BTW, i add 1 teaspoon of Turmeric paste to my smoothie.

Get the juicer out, you will feel the benefit immediately.

Guess I should give it a try. Won't know how I'll feel, if I don't try it! Do you notice any difference with your breathing? Keep well...

Do you just use a regular blender to make your smoothies as it would seem some of the ingredients would not puree or liquefy that well?

Thanks

Swerv profile image
Swerv in reply to jackdup

Hi Jackdup

I use a blender for my smoothies: juice of carrots and oranges as a base (juiced). Bananas, berries, mango etc. which are all soft fruits.

I use my juicer for the veg, ginger, beetroot, cucumber, kale, spinach, mint, lime and apples.

Hi Rubyred777

What i have noticed is that i have more energy and not so much SOB, as i used to be, especially in the mornings.

I have been juicing for a while but only recently added beetroot and broccoli...in fact today is only day 3 for adding these. There has been a lot of talk about these recently so thought i would add them.

Beetroot is quite expensive out here so i am only using half at a time whereas i should use a whole one.

Hi I eat one beetroot with a salad each day, but I have tried juicing it as well.

Just look out for the pink wee!

Ergendl profile image

Beetroot is very easy to grow in the garden if you're on a limited budget. If your not, various beet juice manufacturers are willing to deliver supplies to you. Some juicing manufacturers do that too.

Swerv profile image
Swerv in reply to Ergendl

Not easy to grow beetroot out here which is why it is expensive.

Was in Makro again yesterday and noticed they had run out of beetroot, so will see if when i get the next batch i can freeze them in slices?

Merv

Ergendl profile image
Ergendl in reply to Swerv

I've only pickled beetroot, not frozen them. Visit gardenfresco.co.uk/growing-... for a recipe. It says they're best cooked whole beforehand and skinned, and can then be frozen whole or in chunks, so slices should be OK. Use in 6 months.

Swerv profile image
Swerv in reply to Ergendl

Hi eregendal,

Apparently freezing raw beetroot is not recommended and i don't want to cook then beforehand as that defeats the object of juicing them raw.

Will just have to buy them when available.

So, which one's the best - if any? Recently we've had ..vitamins A&D, Cannabis 0il, Tumeric & black pepper, salt pipes and now beetroot! Do any of these really work for the lungs? I've found benefit from Cannabis oil from the point of aches and pains etc., but can't honestly say it's made a great deal of difference to my sob - a little maybe, but not a lot, so what's the answer short of a transplant? XX

I think its like everything else some things work for one but not another. I just thought I would share it as they are trialling at my local hospital, apparently it can increase your exercise capacity which we know benefits us.

in reply to Nikkers

I've always grown it Nikkers, so I don't know if it delayed the onset of copd or not, but I enjoy it anyway. I suppose it is different strokes for different folks.

Wish there was a magic wand for you.

Hi Nikkers

I will let everyone know about cannabis oil soon as i have just made a batch. Got the mixture a bit wrong though as added too much coconut oil....i made suppositories. Will make another batch during the week.

Going to give it a couple of weeks before releasing the results, although could be sooner if there is some kind of miracle.

Best

Get a jar of Beetroot from the shopn and drink the juice, that helps me.

iviviv profile image
iviviv in reply to debore

Won't that just be vinegar in the jarred stuff?

debore profile image
debore in reply to iviviv

Yes, but not verry mutch

I grow my own beetroot - it is something you can grow anywhere in between the flowers and shrubs, plus the seeds are big and easy to plant. This year I also grew the golden beetroot - not so earthy a taste, and I have a big jar of pickled chunks all ready for Christmas time.

There has been a small trial to see if drinking beetroot juice before exercise enables people with COPD to exercise for longer periods. Now more in depth trails are taking place and I understand my consultant is one of the drs who will be conducting a trial in Kent, I have no idea if there are more trials in other parts of the country.

I will have a chat with my gp before having a try as there could be side effects from drinking too much beetroot juice as it is very concentrated.

Sorry if I sound ba-humbug but as all the steroid medication I either inhale or swallow has caused Cataracts, high blood pressure, thin skin and cholesterol and a few other subjects to gross to mention, I do not want to add any further side effects.

Cheers

Hi Kimmy

I've only just heard of it on the news, so I guess I'm not eligible for to be part of the trials. Probably because the COPD is a newish problem for me and my Bronc. and Asthma are the ones they can't control.

If the trials show that people with COPD have the opportunity to exercise, this hopefully this will lead to them to have a better life I shall be a happy bunny for them.

I'm just being a bit crabby a the moment, as I feel poorly and down in the dumps but I do worry that we sometimes put our hopes on remedies at have yet to be tested properly.

Cheers,

Sue

That's very interesting Kimmy. About time they did some research into natural cures rather than the medications with nasty side effects.

'. . . Bailey and associates evaluated the effect of beetroot juice consumption for six days on the oxygen cost of moderate- and high-intensity exercise, blood pressure, and plasma nitrite concentrations. The subjects consumed 0.5 L of Beet It (5.5 mmol of nitrate) or placebo (a black current cordial with negligible nitrate) for six days and completed a series of low- and high-intensity cycling tests on the last three days. On days 4 to 6, plasma nitrite concentration was significantly higher and systolic blood pressure was dramatically lower (8 mm Hg) in subjects who drank beetroot juice compared with placebo. The beetroot juice significantly reduced the oxygen cost of moderate-intensity cycling exercise by 19% and increased the time to exhaustion during high-intensity cycling by 17%. . . .'
