Hello everyone,

I have just replied to PollyP in response to her question about the best treadmill to buy. It just struck me that I should share the advantages of having one of these in the home.

Firstly, it will in many cases be advisable to speak to your GP about this before buying one.

Many people find the winter weather has a bad effect on their lung problems, including me, and tend to go out much less in winter. A consequence of this is that many do not get sufficient exercise and exercise is vital to maintain our lungs in the healthiest condition possible to combat the various problems we have in this group.

I have found that having a treadmill helps this situation enormously because you can get on, switch on and adjust your WALKING speed to whatever speed you feel comfortable with. I emphasise "walking" since most people think of treadmills as "running" machines!! If indeed you are up to running, they are fine for this too, but I bought mine for walking (I am 80!).

When you get comfortable walking on the treadmill belt, and after a short while, you can easily adjust the speed upwards gradually to give yourself a little more exertion and therefore a little more benefit. You will be surprised at how your lung function expands with slowly increasing speed, still keeping this within your comfort level.

I suggest that anyone who wants to try a treadmill contact their local gymnasium (if you have one locally).

I didn't have one, so I went straight to the treadmill review sites and bought one. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has made quite a difference to my breathing and ability to walk distances outside, when the weather permits.

The review site I used and recommend is: treadmill-running-machine-r...

Good luck to anyone going down this route, and please don't hesitate to ask me if you need any further information.

Regards,

Eric.

Will take a look at the site, thanks again Eric. I still continue with my PR exercises but find there is nothing like a good walk!

Hi Polly, if you don't want to go to the expense of buying a treadmill, you could use the ones at your local gym.

I know it involves leaving the house, but it would get you out & also give you company as well as a walk.

Just a thought, take care 🌺
