Thanks Jimmy, glad you like it. Hope you are ok. Have not been on much this week as I have been away on the mainland for appointments, and on one of them I ended up in the mens loo. An older woman followed me in because she thought I knew where I was going! LOL What a laugh, luckily no men in there.

Yes he does, its quite unusual to see a seal in the bay as that is where the ferries and bigger boats are. I think I have another one somewhere of two seals basking in the sun. Need to look for it. Glad you like it eyes.

Pleased you like it Suz, and there are plenty of old buildings around here. Some of them not so beautiful, but thankfully lots are. So you don't have these old buildings in Australia then? I thought there would be in some of the older cities. You have lots of stunning scenery though.

Yes I am just showing off now. ha ha. Looking forward to seeing pictures of where you and Suz live. I would like to see your snakes, and kola bears, as well as your scenery. Are you having problems because you have windows 8? I hope the posh voiced elderly woman has gotten over her shock at landing in the men's loo's at her age. I don't think she'd ever seen a urinal before.!!

The appointment where I ended up in the men's loo was just a CT scan. I did make Fridays appointment as well, and don't need to go back for 3 months. Just carry on, the consultant said cheerfully. While I was at my appointment the driver of the patient transport took it away for a service, and didn't return for ages. When he did he said he was now on his 3rd ambulance as the other two had broken down. We did get back eventually. However, on the way back, it came over the radio that ambulance control had cancelled my appointment for tomorrow at the pain clinic. They had me down for physiotherapy at a different hospital!!!! Craig (driver) kept telling them the correct details, but they cancelled anyway due to lack of resources. Happens all the time, and poor Craig felt terrible, and tried his best. He has advised me to complain to headquarters.

He's right - hope you do complain. Good you don't have to go back to the consultant for a while though assume you have still to get to the pain clinic.

Thanks O2, you don't even know half of it. The carry on with patient transport is incredible, and it affects everyone. Got back too late on Friday to cancel the pain clinic as it had shut. Gales predicted again starting tonight and early tomorrow morning so the irony is that the early transport will not be able to go, and the wind is to die down later, and so they should therefore be able to take me, as the earlier patients will be cancelled. I will phone ambulance control and suggest that to them before I cancel my appointment. Craig ( driver) suggested asking for a telephone consultation at my appointment time. Will just have to wait and see what happens. I am on morphine patches and would like to get off them if possible, but will not be able to do so until I see the consultant. Happy days.

Oh so sorry, huggs, it must drive you crazy. You must feel so out of control. Bute looks so near to the mainland but it must feel a thousand miles away when you're stuck and can't get there.
My very dear friend is on morphine at the moment after nasty op on her tongue so i know a bit about the difficulties of pain relief and the strong desire to get off the morphine.

Thanks O2, yes it does drive me crazy at times. Bute is only 7 miles from the mainland from where the main ferry goes. At the most Northern tip of the island there is a small ferry which lands you in the middle of nowhere and you are only on it for 5 minutes. Today it is very stormy but due to die down later, but although on amber the ferries are still running. When I saw the forecast I was kind of hoping that the early ferries would be off, and so the early runs by ambulance transport would be cancelled and if the weather was ok, then they would take me later as my appointment is in the afternoon, as they said I was cancelled because there was no one to bring me back in the afternoon.
Never mind, I will just have to cancel my appointment when the clinic opens and try have a talk with someone there.
Its all part and parcel of being on an island and you just have to take the rough with the smooth. The pro's outweigh the con's at the moment.

hahahaha! Yes thank, so far I am well. I bless the Almighty for the lovely sunshine. But I am apprehensive of colder days coming! Take care too. You are on the Gulf Stream, so you are far from winter, I hope.
Sunshine ?? What sunshine?? lol Today it is very stormy here, and the sky seems to be meeting the sea.and are the same colour. The sea is whipped up and its pouring with rain, but not cold, just that very damp feeling. Although we are on the Gulf Stream it is usually just a bit warmer than on the mainland and we can have a climate all of our own at times. Make sure you get plenty of winter woollies in Michael, and when you go out in the cold cover your mouth and nose with a scarf so that the air is warmed up a bit before it hits your airways. Bossy boots today, sorry Michael, I just remembered that's what I do. Keep well.

I hope you mean boots and not, 'bots'. lol Yes you might need foul weather gear, waterproof trousers which also help with the wind, and all the rest of it. When I had my dogs I was out in all weathers and eventually ( after saying I wouldn't be seen dead in them) got waterproof trousers and it was amazing the difference they made, keeping me dry and warmer. Oh happy days! Sometimes I think I sound bossy, but I promise I don't mean to be! ha ha. Keep well.

I have aseen a friend in one of those storm trousers. It looks like a good idea. I shall try to get some, because indeed, my legs get cold in teh cold, biting wind. Here in Kent, along the Thames, we are battered regularly by the Northern wind coming direct from the Arctic. No great fun. I have already the buff (or snood or Tube) to protect my throat. I've got two sorts, one slimmer and one thick. Sometimes, in bad wind I put both on!
I might een put one of these during the night to protect my throat; the buff that is, not the trousers!!! I pull two duvets over myself. My cleaner thinks I'm crazy! It's my body not hers! (That's another bossy bots!!!)

I am lovely and cosy at night because Felix cuddles up to me and he is a big lad. Also have to wear a neck collar which makes me too warm at times.
If you get those trousers you will know the world of difference as I know I did. Your legs don't get wet or cold. Remember and put your ordinary trousers on beneath them. lol That's for calling me bossy bots. ha ha.
When I used to walk my dogs late at night in the winter, there was not many people around so I would wear a balaclava and my jacket hood on top. I don't care what I look like as long as I am warm, dry and comfy.
Don't be going and getting overheated now Michael, its only autumn!! lol

Thanks, onamission and pleased you have enjoyed it. Its on The Isle of Bute off the west coast of Scotland. Its not usual to see a seal at this particular spot as that is where the main ferry and larger boats go. Else where on the island there are a colony of them, as well as getting some popping up in different places now and again.

My friends dad is from Bute and her relatives Tommy McDonald had a coffee bar in Bute his wife was a nurse this was 40 years ago. In winter it can be destitute but still a great place do you have a hospital or do you have to go by boat to the main island
Hi, I am afraid this was before my time, as I have only been here 24 years, lol only 24. I do know someone I can ask though about your friends relatives, as she has been here for over 50 years and knows everyone their dogs, cats, children and grandchildren. She likes to provide information so I am sure she will know, and where they stayed and everything. If you have any other names, but you don't want to put them on the open forum the just pm me.
It can be quite destitute in winter, but I like that. There is a good ferry service, weather and technical difficulties, permitted
We have a 13 bed cottage hospital with an A&E department, and one maternity bed. The hospital would have been around when you visited Bute. We were suppose to get a new one, but they refurbished the old one and cut the beds. If it is anything serious then the helicopter comes in, and is also used after the ferries go off at night time. There are various visiting consultants but I am not sure what ones now. Certainly none of the ones I need to see come here, so it is a visit to the mainland for that. The nearest largish hospital on the mainland is called Inverclyde Royal in Greenock. Depending on what is wrong some people have to go to Glasgow for treatment.
Its a lovely island. I have posted a few photos of Port Bannatyne where I stay, but many of my photos are apparently too large and need reducing in size. I have just posted one of a baby sparrow just to see if it worked or not.
Does your friend still have relatives on Bute.? Or have they moved or passed on.? There are a lot of McDonalds on Bute, but I will ask this person about Tommy. If you can think of any more details let me know and I will see what I can find out.

Craigard is now a nursing or care home, and the residents are lucky having a stunning view in front of them. I don't have a photo of Craigard to post, but might try and get you one If you like. I tried once before on the top of an open topped double decker bus which goes tours round the island in summer. I have been on it many times just to get photos. However I took the picture too soon and got some other random building and by the time my camera was reset we were past Craigard! LOL If I get one over the next few weeks or so, it will only be from ground level, and not so good, but I can try. Do you still have family on Bute. This is so strange, because onamission came on and said her friends family were McDonalds as well, and one of them was called Tommy McDonald. Lots of McDonalds on Bute. If you have any more details then pm me with them and I will see what I can find out for you.

Thanks so much for your reply. We have just started looking into our family history. As we went along, there was always another name on the lists, similar to ours, but in Bute. The names of my aunt and uncle were Betty & Theo Gerard. My aunt's maiden name was Shaw, and William Frame Shaw was her father and my grandfather. We have only been back as far as 1883. The names William, Marjory, Shaw and Barritt keep cropping up.
If you have a picture of Craigard or Craigmore, I'd love to see it again. My husband has pointed out that I'd got my McDonalds and McAllistairs mixed up. Oops!

I will see what I can do. It might take a couple of weeks or so before I can get out to Craigard as I need taxi's to get around. There are quite a few Shaws and McAllistairs on the island, but I know someone who has lived here for over 50 years so if you have more recent dates and names that would be helpful. I am going out to get my flu vaccination shortly, but when I come back I will post some photos of Rothesay, and I have a couple I think taken from Craigmore tearoom looking out to sea. When I get out to Craigard which is about 5 miles from me I will get the driver to stop so that I can take a few of Craigmore in general. Its ok, because he knows me, and is use to me asking him to stop, when I see something interesting to photograph. He is in Australia at the minute, and not sure when he is due back. I think its another two weeks he is away. You keep digging, and I will keep taking photos.

Sorry, I was too tired yesterday after my outing to post photos, but I have a few with Craigmore Road in the background, and will post them later. You will not see things in great detail on them as they are just general views which happen to have Craigmore Road in the background, and the Glenburn Hotel. I have just been told that Criagard has just been newly painted, which I am sure it has been many times since you were last there. Also, at the end of this month, ( unsure of date yet, but will tell you when I know) there is to be a programme on BBC 1 which is called Holidays of a Lifetime. It involves Len Goodman as the presenter, who takes celebrities back to their childhood holidays and let them see the places they visited again. So Rothesay is to be the second episode in the programme with the celebrity being someone called Anita Manning ??? It was filmed in July, but what worries me about the programme is that she remembers the Pavillion as her iconic place, and part of it has been fenced off, and is in the process of being done up, and looks a mess! Also Rothesay town centre doesn't look nearly as good now, as buisnesses close like everywhere else. However, it should be interesting for you to watch. I am not sure where you live as I don't know if it will just be on BBC Scotland. I don't think it will though as other celebrities are Eamonn Holmes, and Gloria Hunniford. Ususally in these programmes that air from time to time about Bute start with them on the ferry so you would be able to see Craigmore depending on the camera angle. I hope they have been all around the island and not just stuck to Rothesay.
