Morning Navydad I am 69 and have COPD you get very tierd as your breathing is not what it should be. Some days you just feel washed out and every time you sit down you nod of. Rose

Hi Navydad1, I am only 58 and have asthma and copd. I have been ill for nearly 18 months now and am completely exhausted the majority of the time. I rarely see a tv programme through from beginning to end, ( thank goodness for recording boxes!) and regularly fall asleep through the day. If this is your dad we are talking about, then he is 30 years older than me so is going to feel it more. The doctor and physio keep saying to me, if you need to sleep, then sleep. Your body must be needing it. In other words it sounds perfectly normal for an 88 year old to nap a lot who has copd. Take care, hugs xx

At 88 I think he is entitled to nod off any time he feels like it, and with copd if he feels like I do I can fully understand him needing extra sleep, it really can virtually knock you out. I sit down to watch tv in the afternoon and go out like a light, but I feel better for it, I am 68, so for someone twenty years older it must be important to get the extra sleep.

I'm only 65, so I don't know how it feel to be 88. But i do know a man who is 93 and he comes to the coffee morning I go to. he plays chess and bridge and he seems to have a girlfriend with whom he goes to a poetry circle! then he hasn't COPD.

I believe that exercise can improve your energy level, even if you do it gently. I'd recommend getting referred to a pulmonary nurse. She can see if you could go to Pulmonary Rehabilitation. they assess your abilities there. You can talk to her about your napping. If you are able to they might put you on exercises. It may be a slow process (waiting to be referred, and the picking up of energy). But I believe you can pick up your energy and till needing naps. I do too! No shame in that, listen to your body. Best wishes.

Thank you people for putting my mind at ease I was so worried about him napping a lot now that I know that its fine I'am ok. This all so new to they just barely told us that he had c o p d, and this is because we needed to go to the hospital because my dqd got the flu, and I was really worried because you hear about people get phnemonia and diie. What can I do for him to make this easy and comfortable. He went to the hospital on May 2, 2014 and he had to stay because they wanted to run some test on him and those test Said he had c o p d. This has changed my dad a lot, in his attitude and his facial expression he has this sad long face, my dad always had a smile on his face but you don't see that much any more, I'am really scared. Now all my dad does is get up to eat breakfest then go to his room to watch tv and then when I go to check up on him and he is asleep, he will have a snack in his room but he will eat his dinner in the kitchen then go back to his bedroom and watch tv some more till it is time for him to go to bed. I love my navy dad this his navy daughter. Please tell me you know.
