I have quite severe COPD. In the last two weeks I have noticed very obvious swelling around my shin and ankle of my left leg.

Are the two conditions related?

This could be Oedema ( fluid retention ). With us COPD lot it may mean your hearts working a bit hard.

Here's quite a good explanation.

It seems putting your feet up helps.

That,s interesting Puff, while in hospital my ankles got really swollen it was like walking on jellies. The doctors and nurses did,nt seemed bothered about it and did,nt bother to explain.I shall remember for next time thanks.D.

I have the same problems. It is because your heart is working harder. My doctor put me on a strong water pill for this. Makes me run a lot more to the bathroom, but I feel much better. You may want to mention that to your doctor again, maybe you just need a water pill, but maybe the doctor would like to keep an eye on your blood pressure too. Don't get scared, both are easily controlled with meds.

I get swollen foot and ankle and shin too ..like the others say could be fluid retention. Put feet up when you sitting down...higher than heart if possable . But would advise you see doc about it just to make sure . Good luck. Sue

I have problems with my right ankle and foot swelling especially if I have been on my feet for a long time or the weather is very hot. I take blood pressure tablets which have worked to bring the the blood pressure down but still get the swelling. I have COPD but the GP could not find a reason for the swelling.
