Not even this will make a difference to some people. I know someone who uses every little 'trauma' she experiences in life as an excuse not to stop smoking. Yet she is worried about getting lung cancer. I told her all about C.O.P.D. and emphysema being a bigger risk than actually getting cancer, in the hope that it would put the fear of God into her and make her quit - but she still smokes. Every year she plans to give up one day, this has gone on for the last 10 years, then another bad thing will happen and again she uses that as a reason not to stop!! Most of these events concern men she has been involved with.

Sadly nothing will shock the addict the terrible legacy of destruction has been shown by researchers a quarter of our population continuing with this habit suggests the American idea that treats smoking with the same methods used against drug addiction provide the support desired.

"Most health campaigns have not offered true education, which helps one make sense of experience, but manipulative propaganda. They are misleading rather than enlightening. The benefits that can be obtained from tobacco, for example, are rarely if ever acknowledged in such propaganda, yet nicotine affects the brain in such a way as to be both stimulating and deeply satisfying to the smoker. There is no way that so many people would take up an expensive habit (which is also obviously physically harmful, for how can taking smoke into the lungs be otherwise?) merely because it was cleverly advertised, or even because of its addictive qualities. People begin to smoke regularly when they discover that they like the effect it has on the way they think and feel. And many are unable to give up, even when the harm they are doing to themselves has become clearly apparent, because they do not want to be deprived of that effect and have not found any alternative way to obtain it. For as long as these positive effects are ignored in the advice that schools and doctors and other professionals offer on smoking, young people especially will know they are being hoodwinked and will reject as lies or discount as unimportant even the established facts about the hazards of smoking."
