Yes you are in the right place. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Chat and ask away here, there are quite a few people with emphysema using this community.
I myself have emphysema, diagnosed nearly 10 years ago, key things to help slow the progress of the disease is stopping smoking and attending a pulmonary rehabilitation course (this by GP referral) the course helps us manage our condition and advises the best course of self help tips to help keep our condition stable. There is a need to have some form of regular exercise to help prevent de-conditioning and deterioration in health. There is a need to avoid people who may be infected with a cold or the flu virus as damaged lungs are more susceptible to infection. An annual flu shot is helpful and a one off pneumonia vaccine. Its advisable for carer's also to have the annual flu jab.

thank you all very much. my dad has been living with it for approx 4 years although was only diagnosed roughly 2 years ago. he is just out of hospital for the second time this year and has really gone downhill quite quickly. we are all very worried

I hope your Dad is feeling better soon Grace, is he having the community matron visit him at home since coming out of hospital? If this has not been arranged and he is still in difficulty you can access the community matron through your Dad's GP. The community matron will be able to advise of pulmonary rehabilitation or if your Dad may need some physio at home first. Explain the problems to the GP and say you feel your Dad needs extra help at home at this time.

Hi Grace, welcome to this most supportive and hilarious forum. About 75% of people on here seem to have COPD so your dad is in good company. There are also some very knowledgeabke people here who may be able to explain meds or situations to you. Good luck
