tony - if it were me, as well as taking down a sample I would try and either see or have a telephone consulation with your GP, especially as you have only been off the IVs for 3 days.

Hi tonyc57

I am not a medical professional but my understanding of colonization refers to a bacteria taking up residence in your lungs or bronchi, something that requires specific medication but I am unsure of the treatments and procedures that should be taken.

I would say though take the same precautions and act as any other lung damaged person should, that is never delay getting treatment for any lung /chest infection, try always to avoid those already infected with a cold or the flu virus, stay at home when temperatures are excessively cold, hot, damp or windy. Stay away from smoke or any irritants of any kind.

I think in your case you may need to take extra care from exposure to infection and during winter months avoid where you can enclosed public spaces and transport etc.

But please do phone the BLF helpline as suggested for further advice on this, helpline open Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm on 03000 030 555.

I do hope things will improve for you soon.

Just waiitng for my respiritory nurse to get in touch with me.

Good luck with the Doctor - best thing you can do - don't wait! Hope it all gets sorted out for you. Would also advise you ring the blf number - they may have some advise that could help when talking to the gp. Take care TAD xx

Hi tony

I know lots of bronchiectatics who are colonised either with pseudomonas or haemophilus - I am colonised with haem. I had many months of samples coming back with HI and it also became resistant to some abs. A course of IVs will quite often appear to have eradicated the bug entirely, but some will lurk around in scar tissue etc. This doesn't mean it will cause you problems constantly, but it will rear it's ugly head now and then. Sometimes prophylactic abs help (low dose abs taken either 3 times a week or daily) to keep the pests in check.

Best to give BLF a bell and explain your particular problem - they will be very helpful.

cofdrop -t hanks for your post. I am beginning to understand what goes in my lungs - think it could be colonisation. Constantly on antibs. I wouldn't mind betting if my phegm was checked now, that there would be something in it. Bears out what BC says.

Hi Annie - sorry you are constantly on abs, although this in itself doesn't necessarily mean you are colonised with one particular bug or another. It could be different infections each time. That's why I think it's a good idea to get a sample in, as your consultant can build up a picture of what you grow and the frequency and whether or not you are colonised. As you may know I've had bronch for many years and although I have had numerous infections all my life, it is only this last couple of years I have been colonised.
