Does anyone else get terrible muscle spasms they can occur anywhere legs arms stomach neck and it really hurts

I would like to know the difference between muscle spasm and cramp. I know, if am doing fine work like sewing, my fingers sort of curl up. I have to straighten them. Other parts of the body. I am not being very helpful. i hope you get more positive replies, mogsy.

hi with me spasms tend to come when i go swimming however have had this when taken my shoes off my feet tend to lock up. cramp is when you get a really horrible pain when you try to move or straighten my leg in the muscle in the calf of my leg and its so painful has had me in tears and iv got a very good pain threshold.

Hi mogsy, I do get cramp sometimes,same as Annie, in my fingers or toes, and under my diaphragm. I've never sought any help for it but have read on this forum a few times that it can be a sign of low potassium in the body. Some people suggest bananas are a good source of potassium but there are also lots of other foods that contain it (just Google foods high in potassium). Have you checked your drug leaflets to see if it's a side effect of any of them? Otherwise, I would see your gp if it's causing concern. Libby

My husband gets terrible cramp in his legs at night in bed. I try to get him to drink more but he also has stage 4 kidney failure so can't drink too much and also has to restrict his salt. He does find a banana helps though and although it may be an old wives tale I put a cork under his bottom sheet the other day and he hasn't had bad cramp for a couple of days!! I guess I should add lol but it worked!!

hi worried-wife, I used to get horrendous night time craps. I discovered after I changed my pain meds from soluble paracetamol they almost disappeared completely! M

Thank you, He does take paracetamol so perhaps a change is indicated. Will see what the doctor/pharmacist can offer in replacement then.

I am ok with the capsule form, it's only the disolving ones I have a problem with! M

i use to always get cramp in my muscle on backs of my legs however i have started getting muscle spasms in my feet they tend to lock up and is very painful i take quinine every night for this

Yes often bit been told my cramping is to do with fibromyalgia not lung problems although I have both

I take quinine sulphate and find that helps. I suggest talking to your GP. Salbutamol causes cramp - and it can be spasms anywhere.

Mogsy, I also get horrific muscle spams in ALL parts of my body. The most frightening are the ones I get in my chest. They can happen at any time of the day or night.

I take Quinine every night but to no real effect. It has come to the point that I will probably be talking to my Dr about it again.

The other bad spasms are the ones in my fingers and arms. I do Cross Stitching and quite often my hands just spasm and my fingers go all out of shape. I am unable to do anything for a good few minutes and afterwards I am in pain for a few hours.

Hi Mogsy...

For years [now] I have been having terrible problems with my legs especially the right one. It only happens at night and stops me from sleeping. I take at least two if not three Co-Dydramol to ease the pain because it can be either the nerves that are hurting or more often that not it is the bone itself that hurts so much that to try and relieve the pain I lift the leg up and drop or slam it down on the bed. I have gotten so used to doing that, so much so now it is done automatically and as with the Co-dydramol, has no effect whatsoever.- nobody seems to know what it is. I usually like to sleep with nothing on but I am stopped from doing so because the area around the leg at times feels like it is frozen and so I have to wear clothing or tubi-grip. What does work for me though for the majority of the time, and is usually a last resort thing is I can be found sitting in a bath of (not to) hot water - just enough to cover the straightened out leg and usually with Epsom Salts in it. I stay in the bath for about ten to fifteen minutes, then go back to bed and I can finally get to sleep - I suggest you get him to try that - but it only works when the legs hurts and not be done as a preventative cure. Would be interested to hear if this works for him if he decides to try it out.
