Hi Smudge, the best thing to do is next time you visit your gp or respiratory nurse, take your oximeter and see how the reading with theirs compares. This should give you a good idea of its accuracy. Libby
Excellent advice from Libby - I have one and did the same, mine was exactly as the G.P's one. It sets your mind at rest then. 
I took mine along to check it against my respiratory nurses and check it again about every 6 months. It gives exactly the same reading.
I think they are pretty accurate Smudge. I did the same as libby and it was spot on. I got mine from ClinicalGuard

Most say in their instructions that they have a + or - 2% accuracy. As others have advised it is a good idea to check against your respiratory nurses each time you see her.

Ebay, I got my self a recording one for about £26 so does a sleep test for me to check my OSA

I'm guessing you have to be quite bad before you need to use this machine, I've never heard of one.
I have emphysema would you use it for that?

That's what I have got Peta. I use a Clinical Guard oximeter. It just lets you know how you are doing at any particular time. It's worth having one.

Yes Peta, you would use it if you have Ephysema if you wish. Not everyone buys a Pulse Oximeter. It just goes over your finger end.
In fact, some Dr's/Consultants are not too happy with patients having their own!!!
Mine are ok with me having one (I was a Nurse until I had to give up work).
Am not being funny, but some of the cheaper Oximeters are not really worth buying as they often give wrong readings. You can't walk around whilst checking your SATS - you need to keep still.
