coughing post trelogy inhaler?

hey all!

I’ve been in trelogy for about 8 months now. I consistently have trouble holding my breathe after I take it, because it gives me a really strong impulse to cough. Usually I can fight it off for the 10 or so seconds but I do cough after taking it for a couple seconds.

Am I inhaling too hard and reacting to the powder or is this something I should talk to my doc about?

Anyone else have this issue? (Google and my pharmacist haven’t yielded a clear answer)

also as a note I also take symbicort, and don’t have this problem with symbicort. But I was having other side effects from the symbicort so we added trelogy to decrease the amount of symbicort I have to use (I’m on SMART therapy as it’s called in Canada I believe in the uk it’s only considered MART lol)

it's the trelegy itself. I can't tolerate it.

Do you know if it's the LAMA you don't tolerate or something else?

I'm assuming that's what it is about trelegy, because I tolerate symbicort just fine (minus the side effects..bruising, muscle cramps etc), my lungs tolerate it fine anyway haha

I presume you use a spacer? I can't hold my breath long enough either but read you can breathe it in 5 times slowly using spacer, so no need to hold your breath. If it's irritating you though I'd ask for a different one?

you can’t use a spacer with the inhaler unfortunately. Its one of the dry powder ones with a narrow mouth piece

really I couldn’t have that as I can’t use ones you can’t use a spacer as it was really affecting my throat so bad .I love my spacer no more sore throats for me .🥰🥰

I’m the opposite and can’t use the spacer type just the dry powder ones like the next inhaler

it’s strange we are all different aren’t we , the best thing I had for bad breathing at night was a tablet called Montelukast it helps so much now I can breathe at night . Xx

I’m on that too along with fexofenadine for allergies and since I was changed back to a dry powder fostair my asthma is much better controlled.I do think it’s trial and error with meds of any kind but drs need to listen to us too

I totally agree and not only that lots of us have multiple conditions they don’t listen several times the pharmacist has rung me to say I shouldn’t be on said medicine because of my asthma but the dr prescribed it . Nightmare my asthma is a bit rocky since Covid recently and I have been using my reliever a lot more but I’m in to see asthma nurse on 21 st march so see what she says . Can you believe My lady asthma session was over the phone . Xx

Is Trelegy the first dry powder inhaler that you've had? Just wondering if it's the medication or the fact that the powder version doesn't suit you. My asthma nurse always checks my inhaler technique whenever I had my review. Definitely talk to your prescribing doctor as they can always split the components of Trelegy into 2 separate inhalers and that may just resolve things or at least highlight if one of the medications is the culprit of your cough.

yea thats a good idea. It's a dry powder inhaler. Trelegy ellipta.

it'd probably be cheaper to split them up anyway. I'm on symbicort as well, which is also dry powder and has steroid and LABA in it, so probably its the LAMA

There are several LAMA options, whereas I believe there's only 2 triple combo inhalers. So if one doesn't suit, at least you can stick with your Symbicort but try a different LAMA. Hope you get things sorted.
