Asthma and copd advice

Hi all, so I have had asthma for the last 20 years or so and recently told I have very mild signs of copd. So I'm trying to give up smoking and loose weight as I'm about 50 pounds overweight.

Just looking for some advice on a few things, I'm told what you eat and drink can effect asthma but I'm not sure on this?

And also this may sound silly but do you mainly breath through your mouth or nose? My nose always seems blocked so I always breath through my mouth and inwonder if that makes me feel out of breath more?

Thanks in advance

HiYour GP or chemist would probably be able to help you with patches etc to help you stop smoking.

Your GP might also direct you to services that would help you manage your weight loss

There are a few healthy eating and weight ĺoss links connected to Healthlock community.

I am breathing more through my nose now, I find it helps my asthma, especially around flare ups.

I think of asthma as a whole body thing. So eating heavy meals can trigger asthma for me, my vitamin d levels are low, which can worsen asthma.

My asthma attacks restrict my exercise so my lungs get unfit. So I am doing more swimming.

So personally I would look at doing a well balanced Mediterranean type diet, do regular exercise of a type that suits you, and definitely stop smoking.

If your body is not fit, how can it fight off asthma.

you may find that a blocked nose is actually associated with the asthma. I didn’t realise I had asthma until I complained of constant winter “colds”, and was eventually diagnosed. As a hay fever sufferer, I found extending the use of my corticosteroid inhaler into winter stopped the “colds”; it seems that allergic rhinitis and asthma can go together.

I have copd my sister had it very bad and died from it ,even though we had never smoked it was caused by passive smoking .I breathe through my mouth mostly because my nose is usually blocked .I feel a bit fed up that parents smoked around us and we suffered because of it .I know they didn’t know the risks then .Hope some of this helps and good luck with stopping I know it’s hard but it will help you in the long run .xx🥰💕
