Preventer gives me asthma

Preventer,on Qvar now,so spacer doesn’t fit it,chemist says use anyway,try half dose as stronger re smaller particles, but have been using 1 puff am ,2 puffs pm as usual but it actually gives me asthma!Esp.evening dose. Can’t just be a coincidence,happens each time,worse since changed from Clenil when could use spacer.

Anyone else had this? I know not supposed to stop using suddenly but feel like trying it- Ventolin to hand.🤔

Rarely, this medication may cause severe sudden worsening of breathing problems/asthma immediately after use.

I think you need to speak to your GP soon as possible.

To add to this - just about every inhaler, can cause sudden increased difficulty with breathing, after use. So, be aware……Always report this, to your doctor.

I had something a bit like that when I was diagnosed. It turned out I react to the propellant. I need dry powder inhalers.

Thanks guys.Thought it was a dry powder,wondered if was irritant to my lungs so sets off asthma,not bad just not what I need!Even chemist cba tbh,think I’m just fussing but I need less asthma not more! Could I be allergic to preventer?Was allergic to carrier in eye drops years ago,trust me! 🙄

the chemist doesn’t seem to understand from what you are saying and describing. Chemists are not doctors so I think you see to see/consult with your GP as soon as possible. Tell receptionist that you are struggling to breathe, especially at night and every time you use the inhaler it exacerbates your symptoms of asthma and you are worried. Don’t minimise. Don’t persevere.

I’m alright back on Qvar but Fostair had that effect on me. I’ve asked for a dry powder inhaler but nurse says I can’t breathe in long and fast enough to have one. My PF is 420-440, currently been referred to Respiratory

Maybe I should persevere and ask doc.My peak flow thing is so low coz I’m folded from Kyphosis,so don’t even bother! My highest was 140. Is Qvar etc not dry??surely it’s powder?🤷‍♀️

Qvar comes in aerosol or powder now.

hi,

A dry powder inhaler does not have a gas propellant, so if the one you have squirts a mist when you push down on the top, that is the powder being pushed out in a metered dose, if you have to suck on the inhaler to get the powder into your lungs that is a dry powder inhaler.

nope,further confused,just looked it up,says dry powder does not squirt out,qvar does but I also have to breathe it in.Clenil was metered dose so presume that was a liquid spray? 🙃Shall have to phone doc which will take a few weeks.🙄

If you are using your qvar with a spacer then it is an MDI - the same as your Clenil. They work in the same way but just have different active ingredients.

Thanks,phoned chemist to say spacer doesn’t fit Qvar round instead of oblong like Clenil was,he cba said use it anyway.Seems same ingredient just smaller particles so stronger but haven’t used any less than Clenil.Must admit didn’t use last night atall, just bit breathless but that’s normal now,took 1 puff this am & gave me asthma again.So must phone doc.🤔

My first inhaler made my asthma seriously worse. The second one we tried caused a mild increase in symptoms - alcohol is one of my triggers, so the GP reckoned the alcohol in the propellant was what caused it. But that wasn't 'gasping for air' difficult, it just left me feeling a little bit short of breath. After a few days, it got better so that I hardly noticed it.

If it's making you much worse, then you could look at swapping to another inhaler. But if it's mild, you might find it settles down after a few days.

Yes. I was told this could not be the content (not sure why not) but likely I'm reacting to the propellant. Either way, since I stopped using these inhalers, I've been free of the constant attempts to clear my throat and build up of mucous. I now use Aerobika to clear that. It works for but that doesn't of course mean it will work for others.
