Asthma and throat clearing

Can someone please tell me if asthma causes constant throat clearing.? I was diagnosed with asthma because of this alongside GERD.

I have been given a preventer, brown inhaler but really not convinced it is helping although I have been told by nurse this can take some time to become effective.

Have a lot of phlegm in throat, but no coughing just needing to clear throat the whole time and or spit out phlegm.

I want to continue use of the inhaler if in the long term it will help, but just would like to know if anyone has similar experience ?

oh yes...100%. Throat clearing happens because your lungs are irratated so they automatically create mucus as a form of protection which causes us to want to clear it up. I wish I had known about it earlier on in my 30's as it was sign. It's caused by either allergies, or something bothering your lungs in the air, like smoke or chemicals, pollen ect...so try and get to the source of what is bugging your lungs. Allergy medications may help. When this is under control, it will be better.

I have this all the time and especially when my asthma is bad. I am in a bad flare and CONSTANTLY clearing my throat, it's gross and annoying and hurting my vocal cords!

I'm always coughing up from my lungs and nearly always have an irritated throat.

I stopped using hankies ages ago.. It's rolls of toilet tissue or kitchen roll now. As you say it's gross, even for us sufferers but just think what it's like for others watching/seeing us.

GP has just prescribed Carbicisteine to see if that helps, wonder if anyone else on here has been prescribed it. (might put a separate post up to see)

It drives me crazy and I have found a lot of relief from resisting doing it. Has improved but never goes away! Sorry! 😢

possible allergy / intolerance causing this, I have issues with some foods that cause issues with my throat resulting in throat clearing. See if certain foods make it worse by avoiding one at a time and see if reintroducing makes a diff. Keep a diary of when it’s particularly bad and over time you may see an issue.

I will add, do not go against doctor advice, stay on the management plan he has you on.

I have this and it's mainly due to Post Nasal Drip for me. I do have asthma as well though.

yep! Its the GERD that causes it. Ideally you need a tablet like lanzaprozole or pantaprozole (sorry if spellings are wrong) to control it.

Allergy meds wont help as its the acid from your stomach that is irritating your throat and lungs.

raise the head of your bed if you can 4-6 inches. You can get blocks on Amazon to do it. Also try not to sleep on your right side. I have asthma and GERD and had the same problem, and these two things helped me a lot. I also take a anti histamine every day, winter and summer. I can still have times when the GERD is a problem, even though I take omeprazole, but not nearly as much. Also a puff of your blue inhaler will help if really bad.

yes! My experience exactly . “Overproduction of mucus“ is a thing. You might consider, that it’s not always about the air. Did you know that a lot of foods have histamines in them? Look up high histamine foods. I have stopped eating those foods and it has helped tremendously. Also, lots of vitamin C. I know it’s simplistic, but it’s some hope.

Yes its a nuisance especially when you are in a conversation .Its embarrassing I carry a antiseptic throat spray and Strepsil lozenges all the time so when its bad im ready .

I developed asthma when I was 27 but developed the throat clearing since my early 20s when I was diagnosed with Perennial rhinitus.

In my case I can’t blame it on the asthma alone 🙂
