Hi. I am experiencing oral blood blisters. They are painful, as they leave an ulcer. I am convinced this is due to inhaler use . I have had asthma since childhood. I currently take seretide, I have tried changing inhalers, however this didn't solve the problem. I think long term steroids are the cause. I have been to medical professionals over the years , and they say its not inhalers yet all other causes are ruled out. This is really getting me down now andi need a reason for this bizarre condition.
I have had blood blisters in my mouth on my palate after eating hard toast, and once after having an in-mouth x-ray at the dentist’s where the little hard rectangular film was in my mouth and scraped my palate. I find they are blood blisters initially which then spread out into a type of bruise mark under the skin before slowly dissipating.
It’s the same under-skin bleeding I get on my arms from knocking or scratching them. My dog scratched my chest the other day with her claws and I had a mark that lasted about a week. So far I haven’t had it on my shins, another place I knock quite frequently.
It’s definitely from my inhaled steroid; a number of people on the lung forums have posted similar stories. Someone found theirs improved by changing their inhaled steroid. I’m loathe to upset my balance as my breathing is ok at present, so I just conceal the worst of my bruising. My skin on my arms also tears easily and bleeds copiously, especially when gardening! A lot of medical professionals seem unaware of this side effect. 🤷♀️
I have reported the blisters as a side effect to the makers of the inhalers, they are taking it seriously, or so it appears. Would be great if others would do this too. Thanks
I will do. The initial response was that they have passed it to the relevant medical department, and a report will be opened. Also, that I will be contacted for more details.
I get blood blisters in my mouth towards the throat. They are extremely painful until they burst and then take a couple of weeks to heal up. I have found that as soon as they burst the pain goes. You need to have them checked out but I have been told by the dentist that mine are caused by my steroid inhaler.
Hi everyone, I too get blood blisters in my mouth, the skin on the roof if my mouth is very thin and delicate. Have not eaten scratchy food for years as the pain of having oral blood blisters us not worth it. My GP and asthma nurse just say rinse and gargle after using my steriods inhaler, like I don't do that already!!! My dentist says it is definitely due to the steriod inhalers. Nightmare!
Ditto! I was getting them for years at back of throat on the soft tissue. I had to avoid toast, crisps, French 🥖 & anything that could scratch. The evening I was introduced to my son's French in-laws a fishbone scratched my throat & by the time I got to the bathroom there was a golf ball sized blister blocking my airway. My poor son, I made him jab it with the end of a toothbrush to burst it over the basin then nonchalantly went back to the dinner table.At that time I was also getting skin rips from the slightest knock so never went anywhere without Steristrips to stick them down & tubigrip to wear on my arms for any activity. It was just how it was and I was used to it.
A few years ago my Seretide was changed against my wishes to Fostair. I was cross at the time but its been brilliant for my asthma and very best of all the oral blood blisters ceased along with the skin rips.
Absolutely incredible and of course I'm thrilled. I can eat anything & the tubigrip languishes in a drawer.
Hi, thanks. I tried fostair for a couple of weeks, and I got blood blisters. How long did it take for yours to stop? Was it straight away after starting fostair?
I dont think it was immediate but I wasn't looking for that particular change presuming that all inhalers were the same. Most medications take a few weeks to take effect anyway so I'd always give a new med 3 months. I think it was a couple of months when I realised the difference in my skin. I'd changed inhaler in the April so wouldn't have been going bare armed except in France where I'd stay 4-5 times a year. Fresh crunchy bread is irresistible in France so that year I'd have found it possible to eat & swallow properly (instead of sucking it to swallow or cutting the crusts off🙄).
My throat blood blisters would ages to heal (even after bursting them with my tongue), I'd have a sore throat for weeks after, it's wonderful to have that all behind me.
