Hello, can asthma and swallowing problems be connected? I know when you get an attack your airways close, but does anyone think that maybe it will have longer lasting effects of making swallowing harder. Take care.

I have no idea Jinnty but one of the questions I am always asked when I am reviewed at the hospital is ‘How is your swallow?’ Suggests there is a connection somewhere.
Look up vocal cord dysfunction. When asthma is bad vocal cords can get over-reactive.
Hi Jinnty, it does look as if there can be connections between people who have asthma and dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), especially in patients who suffer from reflux. Though it can also be from separate conditions, e.g. allergic reactivity in the esophagus, vocal cord dysfunction, or some more neurological conditions. Probs best to mention to an asthma nurse or GP so they can help establish the cause.
