Hi people,I’ve had asthma since 2008 and have had it under reasonable control till last sept when I acquired a cough and I have had trouble ever since I have attacks of horrible breathlessness with mucus in my lungs which is hard to get out, panicked attacks as well, ive had a weeks course of steroids that didn’t help much, then a months course of carbocisteine 375mg and now Montelucast 10mg which I have taken now for 12 days out of 28 day supply ,think it’s helped a little but should give it more time perhaps I’m too impatient hope it will, stay safe everybody

Hi. When I started montelukast I had to take it for a month and do twice daily peak flow before going back to be reviewed by the doctor. Can't remember how long it actually took to kick in (that was 20 years ago), but the dr certainly thought it could be the best part of a month.

Hi thank you for your reply,I have not had quite a months supply of montelukast yet but am hoping this will work, peak flow when I’m well is normally 360 at the highest at moment it varies from 300 to330 and oxygen 98 so not to bad, I haven’t had this mucus problem before as I have had it under control for quite a while, here’s hoping

Thanks again stay safe

Dachshund1 - sounds like you need to change your diet. Not saying you eat unhealthily, just in ways that don't support your body. Ginger is BRILLIANT at reducing phlegm and inflammation. Drink lots of warm or room temp water-no ice, no wheat, dairy, tofu-they all create mucus and inflammation. Look up anti-inflammatory foods and herbs. Educate yourself and make small changes every day including adding meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, take natural Omegas3-6-9 and know that you can heal your own body. With patience and healthy lifestyle changes, you will. I used to have severe asthma attacks and had to take all the medications, steroids, inhalers, etc for years, now I don't because I made so many small changes. It takes time, but you can get there. Every once in a while, I use ventolin but nothing like before. Homeopathy is also helping me a lot. Find a company you trust. Herbal tinctures help me avoid asthma amazingly. There is often an emotional component to asthma, as well. Look into ways to emotionally self-regulate.( Listen to Dr. Joe Dispenza on YouTube-and others) Good luck and be patient. Your whole organism-mental, physical, spiritual is like a brilliant self-healing machine. You just have to learn how to better fuel it.

Hi Dachshund1. So no antibiotics to clear the phlegm? My GP was reluctant to prescribe antibiotics and I developed a long term phlegmy chest. After about 18 months my consultant prescribed long term Azithromycin (4 months) & it was brilliant. I didn't have a chest infection but the phlegm wasn't a normal symptom of my asthma. Anyway, the Azithromycin did the trick and apart from a virus a few weeks back, my lungs have been more or less phlegm free for the last couple of years.

Hope this helps.

You sound the same as me, I tried carbocisteine last year but it didn't help. I have flare ups every 5 to 6 weeks and end up on 5 days of prednisone which normally clears me up quite fast.

However this time it hasn't and have been given a second 5 days.

I started Montelukast last October and had the whole of Christmas and January feeling good but dont seem to be going any longer now.

My mucus feels to be all in my throat not lungs but it just wont clear. So frustrating.
