Dental problems

Hi all! Well, I hope everyone is on the mend of some sort. Does anyone who wears dentures have problems consuming foods that require chewing? My gums have bone loss and can’t chew hard foods like salads apples and the likes. I’ve had to smash meats and veggies. Drink smoothies with protein and berries. It’s so depressing and gross. Have difficulty eating out besides having to watch out for sodium content. Thanks for your reply Beefeater

Hi, denture wearer here!

I was having problems with hard food, but in March I got some new dentures & since then things are better, though I still prefer soft, easy to swallow food. I'm not aware of bone loss in my gums, but I do have osteoporosis (as my mother did). By the sounds of it I'm not in as bad a position as you. Have you examined your teeth to see if they are particularly worn down? Mine had got to being virtually flat & I felt I was gumming my food, or had boards over my teeth. If they are worn it could be worth investing in new ones. Good luck.

Hi lakelover. Im gumming lots of food cause new dentures bought 6 months ago are now ill fitting. My gums are almost flat. Thank you very much for your reply. Beefeater

Hi,

At first, eating with dentures can be challenging. It'll take some time to become accustomed to the feeling of an upper denture, as does gaining the confidence that the seal will be airtight and the food particles won't get lodged inside. Also, poorly fitted dentures will cause difficulty in chewing. In this case, you should go to your dentist to fix this.

I got my dentures last year from a nearby implant dentist( dentistoakville.com/service... ) and I had to go to my dentist a couple of times to get the perfect fit.

And over time, your gums and bones will change and your dentures won't fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, modified, or replaced by your dentist.

Thanks Robertplewis. Quite a challenge indeed. Bottom dentures are worse cause they hardly stay in place. I have continuing bone loss! Ouch!!!! Oh well, just do whatever we can.
