I have asthma/ bronchiectasis, I have had major surgery for diverculi tis& was in induced coma for 12 days, that was 8 months ago, since being discharged from hospital I have found that my asthma/ bronchiectasis has improved dramatically, I have not needed antibiotics or steroids, apparently all my organs were flushed out during surgery & before being hospitalised I was taking antibiotics & steroids on a regular basis,I am now apprehensive about annual flu vaccine as every time I received it I suffered dreadful flu symptoms & breathlessness ,I am wondering if it would be ok to miss out on flu vaccine, as I am feeling very well now..All advice greatly appreciated...Primrose123

Hi Primrose,

I guess it depends on whether you think the risk of not taking the flu vaccine is worth it? I too feel rubbish after having it but it only lasts a couple of days. I would rather put up with those two days than let flu wipe me out for weeks or months.

I understand where you're coming from as I'm not sure I'd want to rock the boat while feeling well either. Can you talk it through with your gp?

Thank you so much ReedB for your sound advice, apart from being 12 days in induced coma I spent 2 months in hospital, my surgery was a huge success thanks to the wonderful surgeon,& the lovely team who helped me so much on my journey to recovery, I feel so incredibly fortunate to be here today, that is a strong reason that I am a bit reluctant about the flu vaccine,I feel it could perhaps knock me back& that is what I am trying to avoid... I will as you advised ReedB speak with my GP & take their advice...I hope you keep well & I wish you good health & much happiness for the future ReedB...God bless xx Primrose123..

Glad you're feeling so much better primrose123. It sounds to me like you already know the answer in your heart of hearts. I would think about leaving the flu jab for one winter and see how you go. I haven't had it every winter as sometimes I've already been I'll when I should have had it.

Good luck and I hope you stay well. I think we all need one of those flush outs!

Hi primrose123

That sounds like amazing news

Glad you’re doing well

For the last month I’ve had symptoms doctors can’t tell me what’s going on and it’s really frustrating

I had period pain and took naprogesic pills to ease the pain (naprogesic pills contain naproxen and apparently naproxen triggers asthma) which I didn’t have at the time.

Minutes later I started to feel really breathless like really breathless

Went into emergency and was given a chest x ray and blood tests

Everything came back normal and they recommended me to do a spirometry

About a week after I had a spirometry done and they confirmed I have asthma because my lung function improved with the use of ventolin second time round I did the spirometry

Was given ventolin and told to use it whenever I needed to

Long story short

Ventolin didn’t help and I was still having breathlessness attacks constantly I couldn’t walk much or even do house work let alone feeling breathless and weak

Went into emergency again and they said that I might have a lung clot so they ordered a vq scan and that also came back normal

But they noticed my heart rate at rest was about 115 which should’ve been 60 and walking it went up to 140

Doctors then were confused if it was my heart or lungs causing this breathlessness

Doctor ordered more lung function tests including a carbon monoxide test and I passed pretty much all of it then went to a cardiologist and had a echocardiogram done which I’m still waiting on the results

Doctor now says it’s most likely asthma so give ur steroid inhaler a try everyday

Then he says it could be something else but won’t give me a ct scan as he says lung functions results are good

What the hell do I do

I don’t have a proper diagnosis and I’m still breathlessness every sec of the day

Ventolin gives me some sort of relief but not majorly

So over it I need help

Also I’m sorry I can’t help with your question about the flu vaccine

Oh dear Idontknow748, you have certainly been through the mill,I am not qualified to give you any medical advice, but what I do see that you have been through many tests & all results have come back normal, so if I were in your position Idontknow748, I would try. to No1 change my diet & eat very healthy, drink Plenty water, & start off doing very gentle excersise, but above all you must try to think Positive at all times, I personally myself did all that when Icame home from hospital Idontknow748, & I have to say it certainly worked well,so I'm not saying that this is your answer Idontknow748,but well worth a try, I feel it will be beneficial to you in many ways if you follow that program...I hope things improves for you in due course Idontknow748, & I wish you good health & much happiness for the future. .God bless..xx

Give it a fair trial Idontknow748, after several weeks you will be totally amazed at the results.. Dont be harsh on yourself atall, brush All negative thoughts aside &be Positive at all times, You can do it Idontknow748 & you will feel much better. I wish you well &God bless you always. xx😃

I think, given what you’ve been through, it would be unwise to skip it. The asthma is still there, and flu can make asthma life threatening. Haven’t you been through enough? Take the protection. And wash your hands frequently. This year’s flu isn’t really stopped by hand sanitizer.

Yes, you are right Suckitup, I have now given the flu vaccine a lot of thought& as you pointed out the asthma although has not been active is still there & I must not become too complacent, as indeed it could flare up when least expected, so I have decided to have the flu vaccine, it was just that I have been feeling so much better lately that I was wary of the side effects I have experienced in the past with the vaccine, that was the reason that I had my doubts about it this time....Thank you so much Suckitup for your sound advice as you certainly have guided me in the right direction...Take care & God bless..xx Primrose123
