Montelukast tablets?, good?, bad?, thought's anyone?

As the title says, if anyone is on them I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts.

The first time I tried these I had vivid dreams & no improvement to my asthma that I could detect. They were stopped. About two years later the nurse asked if I wanted to try them again. Very, very few dreams & an improvement to my asthma. For me they have been good, second time around.

Hi Lakelover, been taking Montelukast since hospitalised January 2018. Helped alot, no side effects. Wish I'd taken it years ago.

No hay fever this year and pollen count high. No more hospitalisations 😊

I tried them 6 or 7 years ago and they had little effect. Tried them again a couple of years ago and they had no effect on my asthma but made my skin allergies much worse.

Think they are one of those things you need to try and see how it goes, many people find them really good.

I've been on Montelukast (Singulair) for 20+ years, not had any significant side effects, it did help me a lot.

My GP switched me to Zafirlukast (Accolate) (cheaper generic) but I had problems with it, was also less helpful, it has been taken off the market.

Yes, montelukast has helped me, but had to persevere at first...crazy dreams, sense of time at night out of sync, but desperate to find extra help, so stuck at it. Eventually no dreams and asthma gradually became less sensitive to my many triggers. Give it a two month try, I would say.

I’ve been taking montelukast for around 3 months. I’ve always had vivid dreams but there now in stereo and Technicolor. This is however easing as time goes on and my asthma is better.

It's worth trying but watch out for itchy rashes and mood swings. I stopped but still on prednisolone and forstair and it didn't seem to make a difference.

I’m not sure if it’s making a difference but I have no side effects. And I was able to go on a lower dose of Qvar.

My (2 y/o) daughter has just started on them. Major dreams only a few days in - she wakes up crying for a few minutes - but otherwise fine.

We are going to give it the full 8 weeks before taking a judgment. The up and down quality of her asthma until now means she really needs this or another heavyweight medicine. I read somewhere that 1 in 8 people choose to come off this medicine, which obviously means that 7 in 8 stay on it.

I have taken them for several years now. I take 10mg at night. After seeing an allergy specialist who was changing my medication she said I could try weaning off it and see how I go, but if I worsened to just start taking it again properly. I found that when I lowered the dose (taking it every other day) I started to wake up in the night coughing, so I reinstated the tablet again. I have therefore only positive things to say about the medication. I haven’t had side effects. I do get vivid dreams sometimes, but I don’t think that’s related to montelukast, it happens if I drink caffeine, so it’s most likely caffeine related.

Made me feel so depressed and would burst into tears as soon as anyone asked how I was...didn’t seen to make much difference to asthma..although didn’t stay on them very long because of side effects..back to my normal self as soon as off them..good luck with them they may suit you..

On it since 2000 - GP initially sceptical, but improved my average PF by 50, so for me much more effective than preventers.

I've been on montelukast for a good couple of years and ive found that it is brilliant for maintaining my asthma stability but if im not well I'm better controlled if i have a break for a couple of weeks after a flare up.

I had two strengths and both made me fall asleep all day on and off - useless for trying to work. Was very woolly headed. Can't remember how it affected the asthma though.

I suppose I could be persuaded to try it again some time.

I tried them for about 6 weeks and had my first infection in a year. On the patient information sheet it says that after issue it was discovered that more than 1 in 10 patients were experiencing the side effect of upper respiratory infections. And that info is not on the NICE sites used by doctors. ???? What sort of drug is that to give asthma sufferers? If it helps others, fine, but I wouldn’t use it again

I started taking them in Jan 2016 as part of my treatment to get control of my asthma. These were prescribed by my then asthma nurse (20 years experience) who thought there was allergic part to my asthma. She was prove right after nearly two years ago IG blood test proved I am allergic the dust house mite.

No side effects since taking them. I remember my nurse saying that to give them two weeks to work they either work or not no middle ground.
