Peakflow While having Asthma Attack

Hi.

I had, what felt like a serve asthma attack today. I'm pretty sure it was caused by stomach acid. (been over eating and drinking lots of beer) If anyone has knowledge about Asthma attack caused by GERD, please feel free to share :-)

My primary question is tho, I took my emergency inhaler 4 times during this attack before i felt relieved a bit. I tried to blow into my peakflow, while still struggling a bit, and it was 550? Normally im 600.

I'm so confused by this... Was I just mentally struggling after my 4th emergency spray hit, or was there still a bit of asthma attack in me. It still felt like a bad attack.

Primary question: Is it possible to have a high peakflow, while having an asthma attack.

I eventually felt better as time passed.

Hi there,

I’m glad your feeling better now!

I suffer with asthma and gerd and feel like they often come hand and in hand and worsen and trigger each other. Are you on medication for your gerd? Since I’ve been taking lansoprazole it has been much more controlled and helped a lot.

I’m not sure about the peak flow, mine is usually 400 but can be below 200 when really unwell or in an attack. I think it depends, do you keep a peak flow diary? Has it ever been high before during an attack?

It would be best to discuss this with your gp or asthma nurse

Hi. Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes, i have Been on meditation for Gerd before, and that definitely helps. But once I’m off the meds, I am back to square one

I do keep a peak flow diary, and it’s usually between 500-600 all year long. I haven’t tried, while having an attack before. Which is why I’m wondering how it can be 550 while I’m feeling like I Have a serious attack. I did just take 4 puff of my emergency tho. But still felt really bad at that moment.

Silent reflux (LPR) and GERD both can cause shortness of breath it is well documented. GERD and LPR are often misdiagnosed as asthma.

Possibly could be reflux. If large Airways not affected by inflammation but small Airways are may have high peak flow.
