The cap keeps the inhaler clean and free from dust. Obviously keeping it in a bag is a good way of minimising dust etc. If the nozzle gets clogged with small particles then it may not work and will need cleaning with clean water. I would think as long as you keep it in a clean, dust free place it will be okay. If you are not sure then you can always spray it into the air (away from you) and run it under water to rinse it.
