Hi all, just joined and glad to be here. Just needed to chat/vent and maybe get some feedback. I don't know yet if I have asthma, I have been given appointments for spirometry tests. I had a 3 month cough, night and day, before being given 3 lots of antibiotics, then after waking one day and having trouble breathing was given 2 inhalers, preventer and blue one. The inhalers stopped the nagging cough, but I am still bringing and coughing up mucus everyday. I did have an infection with the cough, so am not sure if this could still be the remnants of that or if I have developed asthma. My peak flow is coming up at 250 everyday or there abouts. I have been sent to see a consultant but my return appointment is not till November 2019! This cough started the same time as a large 5 storey building was being demolished at the end of my road :/ Of course I can't say it that was that that was to blame, but I have never had anything as bad as this..(I already had a animal/dust allergy). Also had a spirometry test at docs which showed improvements after taking inhalers.

Hi welcoming here to this forum. We are a friendly bunch. Having a block of flats demolished nearby you won't be good for anyone. It sounds like your inhalers are doing your job. It would be a good idea to find out your best peak flow. This is based on male/female and age. Google this.You sound like you are on the way up. I hope and pray this continues.

Dust can be a real problem for people with respiratory problems. I would suggest keeping the windows closed to minimise the amount of dust coming into your home. Once in it can stay around for ages. It irritates the mucas membranes this could be an irritant on top of any inflammation caused by an infection. Damp dusting surfaces helps to get rid of it. Hoovering with a cleaner with a hepa filter (which stops dust flowing through back into the air might help. An air filter for the rooms can also filter out dust.

With a peak flow of 250 I suggest you go back to your doctor. Sometimes a short course of steroids can help to settle inflammation etc. The Asthma Uk website has lots of useful information about peak flow, keeping a diary, and having an Asthma Action Plan from your GP for managing the ups and downs of having asthma. Hope you feel better soon.

I too was diagnosed with Adult Onset Asthma after a lot of dust issues. In 2016 We decorated both our lounge and my mum's hallway, both which needed a lot of preparation involving sanding plaster. DUST everywhere, then we bought new carpets, more Dust and fumes. One year later I was diagnosed. But to be honest I'm not sure if I'm on the right meds yet. Fostair 100/6 and ventolin. Good luck, I've not been referred to a consultant yet but am thinking about pushing for it. It's so embarrassing when I set off on a coughing fit in public. Later today I will be ringing Asthma UK nurses for advice. Good luck again.

Thank you for your replies I am not on antihistamines, although probably should, the pumps stop the cough, the main problem is the heavy mucus that appears out of nowhere (I didn't know asthma did this?), I feel a heavy chest then the mucus appears and can be quite choking and scary. I suffer with anxiety as well, and have noticed that half the time it happens when I am anxious, and the other half for allergy reasons, spicy food, smoke, stress. Was perfectly physically well until a couple of months ago. So bit shocked to have this.

Hi, I am not sure if I am in the right group as I have COPD however I believe that Asthma and COPD are linked. However, getting back to your question in respect of still coughing and bringing up Mucus, regardless of your Spirometry readings I would see your doctor particularly if you have run out of Antibiotics as most doctors have a handle on what infections are going around the area and treat all patients as it would be the same as usual when you get a series of the same infections and thereby treats as the same. However, in your case, it would appear that yours may be different, if you can take a good spoonful size of the mucus as a sample as they can sometimes get a better appreciation of what the infection is and if required they can send it off to the lab for testing. I had to do this on one occasion as like, you, it was going on and on until he requested a sample of Mucus and then he could direct medication to fight off the virus which you have. And good luck hopefully you will get this resolved the sooner the better.

Hi Aerocopter, thanks for your reply. They did a mucus sample and got the name of the infection, then I was sent home with no further antibiotics!?! Maybe they thought after 3 lots there was no point. So will have to wait for my next appointment in four months...all will be revealed...eventually!
