A coughing toddler & Montelukast

Hi everyone,

I’m new here & looking for advice for my 2 (almost 3 year old).

She’s had a chronic nighttime cough since Sept 18. It’s no exaggeration to say that she coughs all night long.

First saw the consultant in Jan who prescribed her a brown preventer (1 puff morning & night) & a blue reliever. She didn’t improve at all. She had another app with consultant on Thursday & was prescribed Montelukast granules which she started on Friday night.

The first night (Friday) was fine, she coughed but slept all night as normal. Last night (Saturday) she coughed but not quite as persistent as normal but she was awake pretty much most of the night. She kept saying she couldn’t sleep. When she did dose off she was moving like crazy then would just wake up.

I know one of the side effects of Montelukast is disturbed sleep/insomnia but she’s only had 2 doses. Are the side effects likely to have kicked in already?

Would giving her it in the morning help the sleep issues?

Has anyone else who’s child has a persistent cough found a treatment that helps? If so what?

She’s had allergy tests but nothing showed up in them & currently awaiting results of a blood test.

Thanks for reading!

I would give your daughter 2 teaspoons of organic flaxseed oil one in the morning one at night and some fish oil too for the omega 3 content

Thank you! I’ll check this out!

I have a friend who is on Montelukast and had the same symptoms at night after 2 doses. Talk to a medical professional before changing the time of the mediation being given. My mate spoke to the doctors and agreed for the time to be changed. She now take it in the morning. She is doing better on it But there's different meds out there to control asthma so if this doesn't suit her then they can change it to something else

Thanks for replying, glad your friends side effects have settled down. I’ve spoken to the pharmacist at NHS 24. She said that the side effects Ava had last night are rare & it’s quite worrying that she’s experiencing them. She also said that Montelukast is absorbed very quickly so highly likely to experience side effects after two doses.

So I’ve to stop the medication until I speak to the consultant tmrw.

I hope she grows out of this 😢
