Montelukast (asking for a friend)

She has been given Montelukast as her asthma unfortunately took a slight turn for the worst. She is now recovering. Can Montelukast set of depression or anything linked to it as my friend used to suffer from depression. She is worried about it causing her problems with depression. Nurse said no but she would like to hear from people who might use it long term to see if they can help

I have been on Monteleukast for years and never had a problem with it .

Just looked at patient info leaflet Tell your friend to check it out.

UNCOMMON may affect 1 in 100 people - behaviour and mood related changes (dream abnormalities/nightmares/trouble sleeping /sleep walking), irritability, feeling anxious, restlessness, agitation including aggressive behaviour or hostility, Depression

Point must be made just because your friend has had depression in the past does not mean the medication will give her depression even though depression is a rare side effect see above from leaflet.

There are times I am prescribed medication and I read the patient information leaflet for side effects and I often think so what's new - ie how will I be able to tell if its a side effect or one of my normal symptoms.

Your friend shouldn't worry about taking Monteleukast if the side effect occurs just come off the medication and will know not to take it again as most side effects occur within a day or two of taking then if friends and family are aware of the side effects let your friend know to come off it and go to GP for alternative

She is aware of the side affects but she has only been on it a week. So she just wanted to know if there was any side effects long term. She has a bad headache luckily. She is pleased to hear that the chance of her depression coming back is minimal
