I've replied to the message you put on the Living WIth Asthma forum as well, so just copying & pasting:

Hi - paint is a notorious trigger for asthma & I've had all sorts of trouble with it. Don't assume either that odourless is any better as all that does is stop you being able to smell the fumes that the paint is giving off.

I've found one or two brands that seem less problematic to me personally (Valspar is one) but I still struggle & never do any painting myself, plus try to get out of the house if someone else is doing it.

It may just be one of those things, otherwise just trial & error, but be careful.

I can't be anywhere near oil based paints such as gloss paint. Apparently they are high in VOCs - volatile organic compounds - and these act as irritants. There are alternative eco friendly paints with low VOcs around. They don't have to be hugely expensive. I seem to remember the last time my husband used a low VOC paint from B and Q. I don't go anywhere near it though until it has fumed off i.e. door closed, windows open.

Also if you like painting - as in art - keep away from oil paints including oil based acrylics. Plus I can't cope with turpentine or white spirits used to clean the brush for these. Water colour paints are okay - no VOCs!

Yes - paint fumes can be a big trigger. For some it’s one they have to avoid completely (ie get decorators in and live in b&b for a few days), for others they can cope with the flare but have to make sure they air the rooms as they go, wear fume masks and use water based paint as much as possible (then not return to room til smell has basically cleared 😅)

I hope that helps

I can’t get anywhere near oil based paint and only a little better with water based. I get decorators in whilst I’m away. It has been like this for years even before I was diagnosed with asthma!

Yes paint does it for me.

I have certainly struggled with my asthma if I have been painting indoors. I find it is better if windows can be opened, or keep well clear. Paint is a common trigger for some asthmatics.
