Asthma, When to stand up

I’ve only been diagnosed with asthma since I was 18 I’m now 22 however I’ve always felt a stuffed to catch my breathe at times, I pleaded with the doctors since I was 15 when I was playing football with my team and literally couldn’t run up the field without coughing so much that I was gagging and almost threw up. The first time I went to the doctors and the doctors said my oxygen and breathlessness was unusual for someone my age and made me an appointment for a lung test but was given an inhaler to see if it helps in meanwhile, during that time I went to work away in Cyprus for four weeks, I had just recovered from a chest infection and within two days I was hospitalised and on a nebuliser A’s again my oxygen was extremely thought, when I was returned I went for I think it’s a COPD test and when I arrived the nurse refused to do it because of my age I was furious and when she went to get something I left. However since then I have been diagnosed with asthma and often have chest infections and get antibiotics and steroids to help reduce the inflammation of my lungs. I have expressed that I wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe and having almost like a panic attack I feel like I’m going around in circles as the tightness and breathlessness never seems to end. I recently went to the doctors after having an asthma during the night and a horrendous cough for about 5 days I got an emergency appointment and the ‘nurse’ said that i need to use my inhaler more because of my hay fever which I totally understand that hay fever makes asthma so much worse , it was strange as I said I was using my inhaler 2-3 times a day which I thought was quite a lot and he suggested if I need it I should use it 8-9 times a day...to me that is too much. I’m kind of lost I’m getting no sleep and when I wake up it takes at least 3 hours (I’ve used my inhaler) to stop wheezing and sounding like a bull it’s just embarrassing and I feel like I’m complaining all the time but I’m at the doctors possibly once a month and never seem to see an actual doctor like don’t get me wrong I think nurses are incredible however I think with an illness such as asthma I think I need to see a doctor and every possibly test should be done something is not right! I can walk upstairs without panting and running or any kind of exercise makes me cough to the point i through up) Has anyone experienced anything like this???

Hi there sorry to hear you are having a hard time. Everybody seems to present with different symptoms with their asthma and we all should be treated as induviduals which unfortunately the medical profession fail to realise sometimes.

Are you using a brown inhaler as well as the blue one or a combination inhaler (Symbicort, Seritide etc).

There are lots of treatments out there and hopefully you will find the one or combination to suit you.

Give the nurses on the AsthmaUk website a ring. They are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and can give you all sorts of ideas for meds to discuss with your GP.

Unfortunately I have found that you really do have to be very stubborn and keep asking and pestering until you get the right help. Not so easy I know but when you have the right meds and have had all the correct tests you feel more in control. Good luck!

What is the name of the inhaler you have?

Make an appointment to see your GP. Take someone - your Mum or someone older would be ideal - and if you both feel you are getting nowhere, ask for a referral to a consultant. You can't go on like this.
