If Montelukast does not work now what?

ohdearherewegoagain profile image

Having tried all of the inhalers, and found they all give horrible side effects and / or do not work, what is the next step if using montelukast does not work?

If none of the asthma treatments you have tried have helped your symptoms , is it possible you don't have asthma but some other problem ?

I have always questioned that I have asthma. Years ago I was told I only had a small infection / cough etc when I knew it was more and I was right when I self diagnosed an underactive thyroid. Blood tests proved I was right and all of the "DIAGNOSISES" that told me I was fine were wrong. I am not one of those people who do not think for myself, I do a lot of research and often tell the doctor things he had not thought of. I was diagnosed with asthma it recently by the consultant at the hospital, based on the fact my heart is ok and my lungs breath more/better when on an inhaler/steroids.

But I did not say the inhalers did not work. I said they work but give me horrible side effects. Not quite the same thing.

Have been on montelukast for a few days and fee a bit better, so hopefully this will continue and stay that way. Thanks for your reply.

Hi you sound just loke me amd what I am going througj!!. I didnt get on well with Montuklast/Singulair when i was prescribed this some years ago as it caused severe tight chestness breathlessness etc. Instead I tried Cetrizine and then Loratadine which i was taking for over 10 years to control my allergies which aggravated asthma symptoms. Now even Loeatadine doesnt work so my respiratory consultant has given me Fexofinadine in addition to the asthma treatments to try and see if it helps to some extent to control my hayfever and allergies. Though I have yet to see any improvement!! You could ask your GP to try you on a antihistamine instead if you havent already taken this prior to being given Montuklast. Hope you get sorted soon. X

hi Kaussha sorry to hear you are struggling, it can get very tedious can it not? I had already tried all the inhalers and antihistamines etc before I went to the consultant at the hospital. I had been in hospital quite a bit with urgent breathing problems but had made sure I researched the subject and spoke to my doctor regularly about whatever else could be tried. Very often it was my research that came up with things. I had to wait over a year to see a consultant at the hospital and it was a long journey, so I would not wait that long and travel that far just to get some antihistamines - which I can easily get from a shop myself or from the doctor.

BEFORE I started to use inhalers I NEVER had any symptoms of hay fever at all. If you research it you will see that such symptoms can be side effects of inhalers, not hay fever itself.
