Is anyone prescribed Montelukast in a Dose higher than 10mg a Day and did it make any noticeable difference to you?

If so, what symptom did it improve most noticeably?

Particlularly interested to here from anyone on higher Dose Montelukast for at least several months.

Also trying to understand if it is ‘ever’ prescribed in Dosage higher than 10mg Daily?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Matman.

I'm on 20mg daily and it does make a difference for me.

I was originally prescribed 10mg, it made some difference, so my consultant upped the dosage as part of my ongoing program. No serious side effects, there was an initial bout of GI upset but that passed in less than a week.

I've been taking the higher dose for 14 months now and it has been very useful in controlling nighttime exacerbation.

Much appreciated. Do you take it all at the same time, or in two 12 Hour apart doses?

All at the same time, in the evening.

That way I don't notice any side effects.

It does induce some strange dreams.

😀

Hi, I was on 20mg for a while a few years ago as I was still not controlled and my GP was trying to find something that helped in the face of poor control and very unhelpful consultants. It isn't licensed at that dose but can still be prescribed off label.

I'm not sure that it helped that much more than the usual dose but it's hard to know. Montelukast certainly did help me initially when other things didn't, but it seems to have become less useful and I don't take it now as my consultant feels it isn't the best for me. I am not sure I've noticed a huge difference off it whereas i think I used to notice more if I didn't take it. I am not as adamant as my consultant though- he feels it really doesn't have a place in non-allergic asthma like mine but I do know it helped me once!

I used to take it in the evening but had poor sleep (don't care about the dreams, always had those). I read that montelukast might cause sleep issues so switched to morning.

Hope this is useful.

I'm on montelukast and have in them since 2015, initially it seemed to be the answer I was looking for, but asthma started winning, I'm still eating them. As for bad dreams, a small price to pay and they are irregular.
