Hi

If you’re stressed or anxious that will naturally raise you heart rate, so the more you monitor it at home the higher it may get, an any hyperventilation will also increase heart rate. Also if you’ve been talking a lot of salbutamol (ventolin/blue inhaler) that will also increase your heart rate.

I’m 26 and my heart rate rarely drops below 95 during the day, and is typically swinging between 105 and 125, then can drop to 60-70 at night or when I’m lying down and resting. It has been like this since I was 21 and my asthma worsened (previously I was a national level gymnast with a heart rate in the low 60s). This has been witnessed by my GP and during hospital admissions regularly but never treated as I rarely get issues with it. During asthma attacks it’ll go to between 140-180 and they’ll give me an ecg, decide it’s sinus tachycardia (normal but fast) and leave it alone as it’s from the situation.

The doctors won’t do anything if they never witness it, and often try not to prescribe meds if there aren’t any symptoms of an issue... if you push them they may send you for an ecg but that’s usually to check for arrhythmias (irregular heart beats) which usually present with more that just an occasion fast heart.

If you’re not getting any other symptoms with it, you’re best bet is to try and forget about it. Try to calm down mentally and see if that slows it down. Also if you’re taking a lot of salbutamol and it’s not changing the breathlessness you feel then try and work out if it’s asthma or panic causing it (as ventolin won’t help a panic attack if that’s the cause of the breathlessness). Mindfulness or meditation would also help calm things down.

Hope that helps

My pulse rate is usually about 74bpm, but when I've been to the doctors for asthma it's been 110ish. I've never had it taken during a severe attack, as I've never sought help.

My pulse rate and blood pressure are surprisingly consistent - I know this because I had a psychiatrist who was paranoid about me taking ADHD medication and made me have it taken every week to two weeks for 7 months. (So many appointments...)

Have you been taking ventolin before your doctor/GP/hospital appointments? If you're measuring it at home and getting high readings but then visiting doctors when you haven't, that could be why.
