Allergic reaction/cortisone?

Hello,

today when I was eating a kiwi fruit I suddenly noticed a burning feeling in my mouth, my skin began to itch and flush and I had some difficulty breathing. Could I be allergic to kiwi fruit? I've never had such a reaction before and have no known other allergies. Or could it be that the fruit had been in contact with chemicals causing such an irritation?

My mother quickly gave me my salbutamol inhaler, which helped somewhat and then I took a 50mg prednisone pill. Feeling okay now. Should I slowly decrease the dose of cortisone like you do when taking it over a longer period of time or is it okay to not do this?

Hi Cherry, my daughter had an allergic reaction to a kiwi fruit when she was at Uni. Her mouth and throat swelled up and they treated her in A & E. They told her never to eat them again cos the episode would be worse and gave her an Epipen.

They look such a harmless fruit! Don't know bout tapering the Pred in this situation.

This is actually very common. I am also allergic to Kiwi, I get the same burning itching feeling. You don’t need to decrease the dose of Prednisolone if you just took it for one day. You can just stop if your symptoms have gone.

There some other fruits and veg that are in the same category as Kiwi, and it is worth a visit to your doctor, to discuss this severe reaction, and what other things could cause the same thing.

You should also ask them for an epi-pen, which would be a quicker and safer treatment for A serious allergic reaction rather than Prednisolone.

Prednisolone works, but if you take it orally , it will take a few hours to start having an effect and if you have a serious allergic reaction this will not be quick enough.

Please remember that allergies like this can can get more serious. A doctors appointment should be in your near future.

Best

Hi,

Thanks a lot! Didn't know kiwi allergies were that common...I will definitely make an appointment to get tested for other allergies as well and keep away from kiwis.
