Diagnosed with Asthma in late November 2017, i have had chest pains everyday from a tight chest to a dull ache, i had no tests other than peak flow readings which i recorded over a 2 week period to hand to my nurse to confirm my asthma.

My meds the standard brown inhaler ( Beclometasone) and the blue inhaler taken with a spacer- my peak flow readings are just under average for my height /age/height.

But the continuous tight chest is starting to wear me down, are there any meds out there than can at least give me a pain free couple of days.

Regards

Peak flow readings don't diagnose asthma - you need a reversibility test to confirm that diagnosis. All peak flow does is to give an indication of lung performance, which could be affected by a number of conditions. For instance, I had intermittent tight chest symptoms for years before being diagnosed with late-onset asthma and fixed small airways obstruction; in my case, it's the latter which has the most effect. I think it's important to get this right as you need the correct inhalers (and dosage) to deal with the specific problem(s). As you're still getting symptoms, I would ask your GP to refer you to a chest clinic for a more thorough assessment.

I was diagnosed through my peak flow readings by my consultant. He said that it being consistently lower in the mornings than the evenings is a sign of asthma, and medication has levelled this out. I think I had a reversibility test from my gp but I don’t think it showed anything Tbc. That’s what the nurse indicated anyway.

Dear Superzob & Thommo90,

Thank you for your reply, i have just spoken to a nurse on asthma uk who was really helpful.

When i visit my doctors next week i will be better informed regarding the the following tests which i have never had or been offerd with asthma nurse..X Ray, blood tests and maybe anxiety test to determine where i am at the moment.

I will shortly record my peak flow and then take two puffs of my ventolin and wait half an hour and then try further peak flow readings to see if there is any change in the readings.

Will see it the extra puffs will reduce my chest pain and tightness.

Best regards
