I think you might be more comfortable if you used lots of pillows instead of propping the mattress. You can make a kind of armchair, with, say, 4 pillows behind you and one either side, with one under your knees. Make sure you have something warm to cover your shoulders. I admit you are unlikely to sleep all the way through, at first, but you should be able to snuggle into this and sleep a bit more. If the cough goes on, you'll get used to sleeping like this. I did.

Hi ChrissieMons,

Thank you for your advice and it is highly appreciated. I will try your method and will get back to you soon! After some sleep hopefully!

Hi - a big pile of pillows works better for me too. I have 2 big ones and 3 thinner ones and I adjust the angle I am propped up at. It is really quite comfy when you get used to it. If I can’t get comfy in my bed I try sitting in the corner of the sofa with my feet up - it’s better than getting no sleep.

Hope you feel better soon 😊

Okay, I will try tonight. I also hope that my new increased dose of the preventative inhaler will help!

If you've an ensuite steam it up sir in it for 30 mins to an hour before you go to bed. No fan on, no window open. Never go from standing to lying down. Stand up, sit on side of bed until you stop coughing. Sir in bed 3 pillows behind you. Eventually on left side uou might sleep. Never on back or stomach as you won't stop coughing. Maybe Singulair or steroids until you begin to improve. Ask the doc. During really bad bout of coughing stand up. Lungs are less constricted when standing up. You stop coughing quicker. No talking. WhatsApp people if you're that bad until your chest settles as talking will set you off coughing again.

When my daughter was 5 we could not get her to stop coughing. The doc on call told us to get her out to cold air ... She stopped then and we got her to hospital. She was bad that night.

Hi Emer1000,

Cold air makes my asthma worse, I assume that being in a big old cold house doesn't help!
