On recommendation of a lovely poster I have just done this for the first time, my question is, although my sinuses are painful a lot of the time, no gunk appareard to come out, which I was expecting? Is this right?!

I'm hoping this will help my horrendous on going cough! I seem to coughing less the last few days but it's rattling and wheezy! It's awful!!!

Sometimes, it takes a few times to start getting the gunk out. I found sinus rinsing really hard when i started but it got easier and more effective with time.

Hope this helps.

Hi. Keep at it. They do work. I used the whole bottle on one side once to really clear it as one side was worse. GP said it was alergy related so I take desloratadin tablets and use the spray avamys. GP says it is an asthma spray for the nose. Works in the same way as inhailer's for the chest. Only need to use when required though so not all year if you don't need too. Certainly helped me. Good luck x

My husband did nasal rinses for several months, after years of allergy related sinus problems, not being able to breathe through his nose, and significant pain when flying. He had polyps (hay fever related). While I can’t remember if it started working instantly, he found it a great relief, and, yes, there was certainly gunk. It seemed well worth it. He made his own rinse which included water, salt and bicarbonate of soda, if I remember correctly. A gp adviced him to do it, and gave him the recipe. Overall it seemed a great relief, even though the ultimate solution for him was to have polyps removed.

The sinus rinse helped me, but it did leave me with headaches, I think from some of the solution trapped in my sinuses. I don't do them all the time now, only when I am particularly stuffy or in pain. Sometimes when I a in a lot of pain sinus-wise, not much comes out. I wonder why I get the pain then.

Often a steam inhalation can help loosen the ‘gunk’ before you do a sinus wash. However it could be that you sinus membrane is inflamed and there is not much mucus there (doubtful, but worth considering).
