Getting fitter

Hi everyone, I've had a year of recurring infections which have often tied me to the house and made walking any distance difficult. I've put on weight, and am really overweight now. I really want to do some sort of exercise, but I'm totally unfit and I'm still not 100%. What simple things could I do, any suggestions?

Hi bowbelle

There's lot of info and tips on our website: bit.ly/2reRaUA

We've also done a series of videos with a sports therapist James about exercising with asthma. youtube.com/playlist?list=P...

Hope that helps,

Dita

Hi Bowbelle,

I know you say it's difficult but walking is actually a good way of getting fit. You don't have to walk far to begin with: you might do, for example, twenty paces away from your front door and twenty paces back to start with, gradually increasing the number by ten (so twenty five out and twenty five back) on a daily basis. If that increase proves to be too much, increase it by less: so an increase of six would be twenty three out and twenty three back.

The important thing is not to try too much on the first go. Start with a distance you are certain you can do and take it from there.

Good luck:-).

Hi

As I'm sure you're aware, carrying the extra weight hampers ability to exercise. As excercise alone is generally a very poor approach to losing weight (dieting is about 10 times more effective) the excercise objective ideally needs to go hand in hand with dieting, or will hinder the activity / exercise objective. The baby steps approach mentioned by MaggieHP is spot-on, especially if you can enlist a friend or someone else to act as your sponsor and Exercise / Diet Accountability Buddy, authorised and empowered by you to congratulate / encourage and reprimand your achievements (or lack of). Good Luck
