I've been suffering buring from the inside recently as my acid is bad. Ive recently not washed my mouth out after using my inhaler and im wondering if my inhaler (preventer) is the cause of my heart burn.

Anybody else suffered this?

Hi CS

could be thrush, make an appointment with the GP before Christmas without fail, it can spread to the gastric system. When you wake up you will see traces of white on your tongue.

Take care xx

It may not be thrush...

It could just be heartburn which is common in asthmatics.

I take meds to control heartburn everyday!

I take a preventer steroid inhaler(Qvar). . I ALWAYS rinse my mouth out and then drink a glass of water immediately after taking my inhaler. If I don't do this I get hoarse and sometimes get a burning sensation. I consider this essential and it seems to work.

Thanks. I usually mouthwash afterwards but havent lately. Just been the dentail and my oral health is great so im not worried for thrush. I shall start rising again and try the water. Thanks

I do not get thrush ( whether I rinse or not) but Iknow that many people do from inhalers.

I started. Getting problems with hoarseness and was advised to always rinse and drink. It does seem to work for me so hopefully it will for you.

Let me know how you get on.

I am on "Lansoprazole 30mg Gastro-Resistant Capsules Mylan", I know someone who takes those tablets that x and his twin brother take, can't remember the add

Hello

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have suffered with acid reflux for quite sometime now. A few years ago I was told by a Gastroenterologist that Asthmatics tend to suffer with this more then most. The reason been the valve over the stomach gets weakened over the years due to the inhalers, thus allowing acid to go up into the gullet.

On the plus side if you are put on the proton pump inhibitor pantoprazole/lanzoprazole they are fantastic for keeping acid at bay.

Please go to the Doctor and get a referral to a Gastroenterologist to get a firm diagnosis.

Good Luckxx

Hi CS,

I suggest you talk to your GP about this.

Not having thrush in your mouth is not necessarily an indication that you don't have thrush in your oesophagus. Oesophageal thrush is rare, but it is very uncomfortable and known symptom of it is heartburn (I was diagnosed with it nearly three years ago - and there was no trace of thrush in my mouth). Unfortunately the only way to get a diagnosis on that is to see a gastroenterologist and you will need a letter of referral from your GP for that. Oesophageal thrush is easily treated.

I no longer have the oesophageal thrush, but I still do have issues with reflux. Things you can to help with that are:

1) be careful with your diet. Anything spicy, any fried food, chocolate, coffee, mint, citrus fruits, pineapple, can all cause issues with reflux and heartburn.

2) eat little and often rather than having a big meal at the end of the day.

3) do not eat anything within three to four hours of going to bed. Lying down or slouching too soon after food is likely to cause problem.

4) if you can, raise the head end of your bed by 4+ inches. This is to help prevent reflux of stomach contents during the night.

Hope some of this helps.

I used to suffer terribly from acid and I take omeprazole 20mg every day, also if I'm really suffering I find sucking peppermint creams helps or a little peppermint essence in warm water eases it. It's horrible I would speak to your GP I'm sure they'll prescribe you something ... good luck

I suffered acid reflux 30+ years, I had a fundoplication operation which has helped a lot, I still take Esomeprazole 40mg and Ranitidine 300mg. I have the head of my bed raised soI'm not laying flat, hardly have any problems now.
