Hi i have 3 inhailers one is clinal 250 the doctor has just increased this to 2 puffs 3 times a day and the seravent is at its highest dose i take montilukast and 2 floroxatine per day to reduse stress levels my job is also very stressfull. Thing is i dont know if it is classed as been severe asthma there is no warning when an attack is immitant i take my inhalers everywhere . Then durin an attack i feel like i am drouning all that mucus yuk my rib cage seems to be at its full expance and afterwards i am exhausted for 3 days on average my partner monitures me if we are at home or out somewhere and i sweat terribly whilst having the attack i have been to hospital before or the drop in centre and put on a nebulizer. I know its getting worse but its hard to admitt it i have been fit all my life never smoked and after 20 years i am ready to accept it wont get any better. At 52 years of age its so frightening

What is your peak flow measurement usually? Are you under a Consultant, as he should be able to tell you, and or your GP tell you if you have moderate or severe Asthma. Severe Asthma usually means that the person has Asthma symptoms most if not all of the time to varying degrees and despite taking all the medication they can prescribe, still suffers Asthma Symptoms. I myself fall into that category, with multiple allergies and infections. Both make my Asthma worse, as well as the environment temperature and humidity.

Your discribing me i do hav it all the time.i have found over the years that the weather can effect it but mostly brought on by stress i thing. My peak flow always seems to be under the expected if i have a chest problem i know because the mucus that comes up is green but found that doctors dont want to give antibiotics.the steroid tablets used to start working in two days of taking them but not anymore its 5 or six days before i start feeling any better. I have made an appointment to see my asthma nurse on monday to ask what chatagory i fit in to. Last time she gave me an information sheet for my collegues at work in case i have an attack which has been useful at times

The other thing that GPs don't like doing is sputum samples to see if the patient is on the right meds in the first place, assuming it is a bacterial rather than viral infection. My peak flow is stuck at 180 (yep, I am a dart board in disguise, especially after all the needles in hospital). Anyway, what I meant to tell you is that I am in my 50s and found my Asthma was getting steadily worse, and i was eventually told that I also have scarring of the lungs from numerous chest infections. This is classed as lung obstruction, which is why my peak flow is stuck at 180. Get the Asthma Nurse to do a Spirometry test and make note of the results. Ask her to explain the results to you as well, and give you a copy of the results.
