Hi everyone

i have a strange question about oral prednisolone, I am interested to know typically how long does it take for them to solve peoples accute exacerbation i.e when people are on a rescue course I typically take 3 to 4 days to stabalise i.e peak flow increasing.

I used to find a few days but now due to age 54 and being on them years since childhood on and off for exacerbation and then 2 years permanently prior to starting xolair injections. I now find they don't have the same effect. I asked the respiratory nurses about dexamethasone and she wasn't happy, but Prednisolone now takes about 6 days to help. You may have underlying chest infection.

I take 20mg of pred as a maintenance so when I increase to 40mg when I'm struggling or have an infection it can take me a week or so to feel the affects !

I take daily dose so increase to 40mgs is variable. 24grs to halt PF falling and then 5-6 days to improve.

I usually respond in half a day if I've caught it soon enough. Otherwise a day to start improving and 3 to 4 days to feel really better

4omg straight away if it feels like an attack coming on.. If not 30mg 5 to 10 days is reasonable but was told to carry on until chest was clear last time.

Hi Emmaleigh,

The one time I know I've been put on them they seemed to kick in about 24 hours, but I was also on a hefty dose of antibiotics at the time, so I can't be certain which medication was having the greater effect, or indeed whether it was a combination of the two. I do know that I had that amazing ' calm after the storm' feeling the day after I was put on the meds. I'm sure every asthmatic reading this will understand what I mean by that

i was put on high dose but it took a while for me to settle because I had two asthma attacks after I was put on it and needed intravenous steroids.

Hi Thanks for the replies it's interesting to know that it works in a day or so for most of us its the case for myself most of the time too depending on what has caused the attack. I asked this question as was having a discussion with one of my consultants registrars she seemed to think the fact pred. Was working within 3 days that it couldn't be asthma and my recurrent asthma symptoms are relating to my allargies and nose problems.

I have just been on it, until last Thursday. It was a first for me. I have given a rescue course on Sunday12/6, but by Thursday I had deteriorated further and ended up in hospital. In the end I was given in all 2.5 weeks worth of pred. I am vastly better, but didn't enjoy the sleeplessness the pred seemed to contribute to/cause.
