My 6 year old daughter has a Constant cough and intermittent wheezing - can anyone help?? Thanks..

Hi. I am after some advice if anyone can help? My 6 year old daughter has been diagnosed with asthma since she was 18 months old. We've had various medications to try, various admissions to hospital, various trips to A&E ( 5 this year so far) various courses of steroids. She is currently on 6 puffs of sereride a day, montelukast, ventolin (when she needs it) and has just completed a 6 weeks course of antibiotics as she has had a lung infection (which A&E missed in April!!!) we are in touch with a consultant which we are not due to see again until the end of this month. The problem we have is the main symptom is either a chesty sounding cough or a barky cough and Intermittent wheezing. As an example since the beginning of May she had been cough free for about 5 days!! Sometimes it gets to a point where there isn't a breath between each cough and then we can't get the ventolin into her and that's when we end up going to A&E - where they then say, she has a viral infection, or she needs honey and lemon or we are not respiratory trained!! It is a nightmare for her. They send us home and she is on ventolin continuously as this is the only thing that eventually stops the cough for a bit. A&E even told me not to give her ventolin just because she has a cough!! I just wondered if anyone else has any experience with a constant cough and intermittent wheeze but are told the chest is clear and what people do to help it?? Many thanks.

Also has anyone heard of middle lobe syndrome and if these symptoms could be linked to this??

Sorry I have no experience of this but, if you have eliminated all possible allergens (the most likely cause of asthma in one so young) then, yes, RMLS with its constant cough and wheezing might indeed be a possible cause. Again in one so young, it can be difficult to diagnose but you would be wise to push to have it eliminated.

Hi have you had her peakflow checked and monitored regularly. this is the best indication for the signs of asthma. several peakflows should be done when she is felling well and if she starts to wheeze or cough. do peakflows to see if it drops. take several puffs of Ventolin through a spacer and wait a bit then do another peakflow to see if it changes. Asthma is a problem with breathing out and peakflow is the best way to monitor it. it has worked for me for years.

all the best.
